Cofradia Anjeo is an excellent tequila. If you are in to collecting, Cuervo has a special run called Reserva De Familia. It comes in a presentation box that changes each year when a new artist is commissioned to design it. As simple as it might sound, just look for the tequilas that have numbered bottles. M&M

I think that spending huge money on designer's tequilas is nuts. You can get Hornitos or Cuervo Especial right here at home and they are as good as any that you pay twice as much for. My personal favorite is however only available in Mexico, or at least not available here in Miami, it's called Orendain and it's yummy. It's not available in the Cancun airport though so you have to shop in advance. But you got to love the Hornitos.....Michele's favorite.

You are allowed 2 litres per person coming back. You'll notice however, that most of the bottles are .750 litres. Buying three bottles is just over the 2, but they'll allow it through without duty.

That brings up an important distinction....is there a "limit" on how much you can bring back? There is a limit on duty free, but if you find a "special" tequila, can you bring back 20 bottles and just pay, albeit hefty, duty?

I believe you can exceed the limit and pay the duty, although I don't know offhand what the rate is. I don't know how much you can exceed the limit though. You may want to check the U.S. Customs web site for your answer. This can also be complicated by how your flights are arranged for the return trip. If you are non-stop, your bottles are delivered to the plane & you get them when you land. If you have a connection in the states, you will still get the bottles, but then you need to put them in your checked bags before your next leg, or you will lose them. Hope that helps. BTW, if you find a small Tequila shop, you often are able to sample the tequilas before making a purchase.

If you are considering bringing back any quantity you might want to check out what your airlines overweight luggage charges would be

Based upon some of my experiences, overweight luggage these days could end up costing you as much as your original airline ticket .....

On a similar subject, although not tequila, there is an extremely rare Yucatecan-made liqueur called Xtabentún which I am very keen on trying when we get there late April. I mentioned it earlier in a specific post and somebody remarked that the "..stuff will kick your butt, kick it again..." In any event, it happens to be available there at Desire Cancun! Below is a Wikipedia extract about it if anybody is interested.

[i]Xtabentún is a liqueur made in Yucatán, from anise seed, and fermented honey produced by bees from the nectar of xtabentún flowers. To this anise and honey mixture, rum is added. Because of the rum content, the xtabentun liqueur is sometimes called a "distilled honey" beverage, which is misleading, because the honey alcohol is itself fermented, not distilled.

The word xtabentun means, “vines growing on stoneâ€
