Text Messaging with Verizon in Cancun

Last time we were at Cabo Desire a guest to us that his text messages from his kids to him while in Cabo were FREE and he would be charged only 50 cents for each text message he send to them.

We are new to Verizon and thought this would be a good way to stay in touch with our family .... DOES ANYONE HAVE EXPERIENCE WITH THE CHARGES FOR TEXTING TO AND FROM CANCUN DESIRE?

Good question...we have Verizon too. Also is there good cell service at Desire Cancun.

Does Verizon require some sort of international plan for service in Mexico?

Don't know the answer to the free Verizon text messaging question but we have found the verizon cell signal to be spotty in the resort. One the night the signal is great and the next night you get no signal in the exact same spot you were the night before.

We usually activate international service for our trip. It will cost you extra for the month but generally is worth it so that you don't have to give out the vanilla resort number and have to worry about someone screwing up when answering the phone at the resort.

We were there in Feb and had pretty good service with Verizon throughout the resort...just a couple of spots that we didn't get great reception.

Curious -- how much is a call TO MEXICO to your Verizon number for someone in the states? What if they are also Verizon ~~ is that call free to them?

I understand that if you have international and call TO the USA you pay around 99 cents a minute. Is that what other Verizon customers have experienced?

We have always just checked our phone a couple of times a day to see if we have a missed call from a family member, knowing we need to call them back (hasn't happened so far--whew! ) but wondered if the cost is really reasonable, maybe we should get and send text messages to check in with family.

you have to do the update download to get international calling from Verizon. Text messages in Mexico are .50 outgoing and .05 for each text received. Outgoing calls are .95 per minute. We were there the first week of this month and the verizon cell worked virtually everywhere, including inside our room. You could receive calls everywhere as well. To check your voicemail, you dial 001 then your own area code and phone number. When the message kicks in, just press # and you get your voicemail menu. BTW, dial *228 to get the updates. Enjoy!,
