smoker vs. non-smoker

Postby dreamtrip » Fri Dec 09, 2011 10:38 am

We are non-smoker couple. Just want to know what percentage of smoker vs. non-smoker in Desire. We don't want 2nd hand smoke while we are at Desire, and definitely don't want it when we participating FUN activities. And, have anyone saw somebody smoked illegal substant at Desire? We did see few couples did it at Hedo III few years ago. Thank you for your inputs!

We, too, are a non-smoking couple and are very sensitive to second-hand smoke - so much so that that we often have to just remove ourselves from situations before we get into severe coughing fits.

We happened to have a European couple in the room beside us on our last trip and he was always outside our room smoking - we share the same balcony area where people are allowed to smoke. Ughh! We had to put towels at the base of the door to try and prevent the smoke from coming in.

I think the ratio between smokers and non-smokers depends on the week, the day and the clientele.

We haven't experienced anyone smoking anything other cigarettes or cigars but that's not to say that it hasn't happened.

Oh, and I have to say that we have always had fun at Desire, despite the smokers.

Thanks, Miranda. Does Desire designate certain area for smoking? Do smoker allow to smoke at the hot tube area, disco, playroom?

I am surprise there is no other Desire norms answer my question.

Smoking is not allowed in enclosed areas of the resort
ie - disco, playroom, restaurants, registration/lobby, computer room, spa, guest rooms, etc

There is a designated smoking area / deck up near the disco and playroom. It's outside and it gets packed!

As Coke mentioned, one cannot smoke in enclosed areas but anywhere else is fair game. We did see one woman sitting on her bed in her room smoking - with the door open. That kinda P'd us off.

If someone is smoking around us we are the ones that move away. And we really try to figure out which way the wind is blowing.

Thank you all. It is happy to know Desire do have the smoking policy likes in US. I hope the front desk will change our room to another one when we are there, if we have smoking neighbor problem. We want to enjoy the fresh air and open view when we have romance. Otherwise, we may just stay at home. Your replies really erased one of our concerns. Thank you!

As a couple that smokes, yeah trying again to stop the habit.

We do smoke outside by the pool, and at the bars, even the hot tub bar.
However, if we are talking to a KNOW non-smoking couple or if we know it is bothering someone, we will either put them out or we will move to a place no one is and have one then return.

We did not smoke on the balcony one visit because the couple next to us nicely said they were non-smokers and did not want it to come into thier room. We respect 2nd hand smoke issuse.

As for percentage I would guess 10-20% smoke during the day, as the night and drinks go on and on I think it is about 30-50%. Just from the past visits we have been to.

texascpl2 hit the nail on the head... Desire is all about being who you are without apologies. However, anyone at Desire (including myself) who still smokes will generally be as considerate as possible if asked nicely. Doing the fake cough thing, or getting pissy about it will not achieve your desired results - it will only breed contention and a negative reaction. I smoke, and when the wife and I go, I always seek out a place away from the crowd, and near an ashtray (implying a smoking area) instead of just arbitrarily lighting up without "permission". When at the pool, I get up, go over by the entrance to the resturaunts where the ashtrays are, and enjoy my cigarette - then return to my chair by the pool next to my wife. Yes, I smoke on my balcony, but if my "balcony mates" asked me nicely, I would make a point of not smoking when they are outside, or putting it out as soon as they exited their room. I think "nicely" is the operative word....pure and simple.

Great responses from the smokers in the group. May I nicely ask that you smokers not stand near the entrances to the restaurants, pretty please, or any other doorway? Go ahead and enjoy your smokes. There are plenty of other places you can smoke. And we really do appreciate your consideration when choosing when and where to smoke.

I was a pack a day smoker at one time, so I'm one of the 'worst' reformed smokers I know. For the most part, we will remove ourselves from the situation, rather than 'inconvenience' anyone else.

I enjoy a nice cigar and don't think they smell bad at all. I don't understand the "that kind of people" remark?

1st post!

I don't smoke cigars and I don't like the smell! I do however totally agree desiday. I too don't understand the "that kind of people" remark! Everyone at Desire is on holidays. Smoking cigarettes/cigars is not permitted inside but everyone is free to do what they wish outside. For me that includes the pool, beach or any other outdoor area. Those kind of people are free to do what they wish. It wouldn't bother us at all. We'll strike up conversation with anyone... even the evil tobacco smokers!

Not sure what all the cigar complaints are about. I don't like the smell of cigars but it's not nearly as pervasive or offensive to us as cigarette smoke. Cigarettes are disgusting.
