Anyone up for some culinary adventure?

Postby texascouple_sdc » Fri Dec 27, 2019 8:41 pm

Hi everyone!

We will be visiting Desire RM in late May into mid June 2020. We've recently done a few online culinary challenges. Of those challenges, we really enjoyed the hot food / hot wings challenges. With that in mind, we were curious if others were interested in some "hot sauce" challenges? We want to bring 5 - 6 hot sauces with us to the Desire RM. We would leave the hot sauces in the very capable hands of the food staff (Arrecife, Sahlo, Tentazione and Suki) restaurants. Anyone interested in dabbling in some hot sauce challenge adventures? We would source our bottled hot sauces from a popular online website called Heatonist. The sauces would scale from 2/10, 4/10, 6/10, 8/10 and of course the ultimate 10/10 on the heat (scoville) heat scale! We think it would be such a fun thing for couples to try these sauces, stepping outside of their comfort level box so to speak! Who's game?

Hot sauce should never be allowed to get below the waist.

Wonderful to hear. The sauces that we have in mind, are sitting in our "cart," just waiting to pull the trigger. Here are the ones that we are considering:

1. Hot Ones - The Classic Hot Sauce (listed as a 2 out of 10 on heat)
2. Bravado - Pineapple & Habanero Hot Sauce (listed as a 4 out of 10 on heat)
3. Bravado - Black Garlic Carolina Reaper Hot Sauce (listed as a 6 out of 10 on heat)
4. Bravado - Aka Miso Hot Sauce (listed as an 8 out of 10 on heat)
5. Hot Ones - The Last Dab XXX Hot Sauce (listed as a 10 out of 10 on heat)

We are considering bringing 2 of each bottle listed above. We are somewhat familiar with the culinary staff. We think Suki would be a perfect place for one set of these hot sauces. Does anyone have a suggestion on where the other set of hot sauces end up?

OMG, totally agree! ...haha! It would be VERY bad to be exposed to any kind of hot sauce, below the belt!

Hey guys, June 10th - 15th means you are just in time! We will see you guys there. We arrive on May 29th and check out on June 12th... and no worries, when we leave, the hot sauces will remain with the resort for others to enjoy until all of the hot sauces are consumed.

We've received some very positive feedback and we've made a substitution. The "Bravado - Black Garlic Carolina Reaper Hot Sauce (listed as a 6 out of 10 on heat)" was removed from the list and in its' place, also a 6 out of 10 on the heat scale, is a sauce called "Dirty Dick's - Hot Pepper Sauce." The name of this sauce is awesome, hahaha! Although we have never tasted this sauce, the label says: This sauce blends habanero peppers with tropical fruits for a sweet and spicy sauce. Let the sweetness of bananas, raisins, and pineapples linger on your palate and wait for the heat to kick in. Great for beef stir-fry, chicken wraps, and as a stand-alone dipping sauce for the daring. Ingredients: Habanero Peppers, Mangoes, Pineapple, Vinegar, Bananas, Brown Sugar, Raisins, Onions, Garlic, Salt, Spices. It sounds yummy.

We were just discussing our plans with our friends (who will also be at Desire RM from June 1st - 6th). They brought up a pretty valid point and asked if there would be some kind of laminated label or note, describing what kind of heat to expect from each sauce. We tend to agree with their logic but were curious what others think?

This sounds really awesome. The laminated placards are a good idea.
Were you thinking of holding a competition as well? We can bring some prizes with us if you want!

Always wanted to try the Last Dab!

The sauces scale as seen in the photo:

The Classic - Heat Level 2
Pineapple Habanero - Heat Level 4
Dirty Dicks - Heat Level 6
Aka Miso - Heat Level 8
The Last Dab XXX - Heat Level 10

We are still unsure how many sauces we should bring. We currently have 2 of each bottle / flavor now officially sitting in our pantry. Thank goodness the sauces have a shelf life of roughly 5 years! We are wondering if we should pick up 1 extra bottle of each sauce (for a total of 15 bottles). On a side note, we found a company that is making our ID TAGS for each bottle. Each round black tag is engraved aluminum. The layout of each tag will read like this:

Hot Sauce
Heat Rating:
2 out of 10

(...or 4 out of 10, 6 out of 10, 8 out of 10 and 10 out of 10, respective to each bottle). Hope this helps others gain a better idea of what's in store for them, for each sauce.

One thing to consider is that since you would technically be providing food for others, It might be a good idea to list the ingredients onsite.

For example, one of the hot sauces you mentioned has mangoes. This could send my wife to the hospital at the least, perhaps worse as she has a severe allergy. Our view is that this is 100% our responsibility to manage, however others might not view it that way, and one might be less inclined to think to check ingredients of hot sauce vs say a fruity tropical drink. The staff always asks about allergies, so as a food provider I'd say you should probably bear the same responsibility.

Oh, we've discussed this very topic in great detail. Hubby has a sister and she is a district manager for a popular food chain here in Texas. Being in the food industry for over 25 years, this topic is discussed periodically. We understand your line of thinking but his sister put it to us this way: If you have ANY allergy (gluten, wheat, shellfish, spices / peppers, peanuts, etc), there is no way to stop that person with that allergy from eating something that could potential cause a reaction. If that person has a food allergy, as a responsible individual with said allergy, it is incumbent upon THAT individual to ensure there are not any ingredients that may harm them. The ingredients are clearly labeled on each bottle so that is a huge bonus. We think it boils down to common sense. If you are allergic to the sun, stay out of the sun. If you react to chlorine, stay out of the pool, if you dine at a seafood restaraunt with a shellfish allergy, read the menu and if you're still unsure, don't unnecessarily put yourself at risk by trying it anyway.

Our take on it is simple. Each bottle is right there. Anyone who is interested in "trying" the sauce, simply has to take 3 - 4 seconds out of their day to read the ingredients. :D

Yes, this is why I said "Our view is that this is 100% our responsibility to manage, however others might not view it that way". I think it's very unlikely that anything like this would happen but if it were to occur you would have to at least deal with it at some level, would be an awful position to be in, that's for sure.

We ended up going with (3) of each hot sauce bottle. All of the bottles are now here and they are ready to go with us to Mexico. Hubby wants to make a neat little hot sauce holder (with hot sauces included of course) and present it to the management team upon our arrival. We did a similar offering on our last visit to Desire as hubby hand built (6) "shot bars" and had them custom powder coated black and had them laser engraved with the Desire logo in gold. We presented them to the management of Desire and they absolutely loved them!

After a little debate, we've added another sauce. It's VERY sweet and tasty. We'd list it as a 5 out of 10 on the hot scale. The label looks MUCH more intimidating, but it's simply a middle of the playing field hot sauce. It's actually VERY sweet, made of sweet dark cherries, cranberries, Kentucky bourbon and a very LIGHT amount of Carolina Reaper Peppers. Even our kids loved this sauce.. !
