Smoking now prevalent?

Postby C&T » Fri Jan 21, 2022 10:59 am

We have heard some recent discussion that in the current short-staffed Covid era at Desire, smoking has become prevalent throughout the common areas. This unhealthy blast from the past would be most unwelcome for us, if so. Does anyone have recent experience with this or comments? We’d despise being immersed in a literal smoke show that we can’t escape and would rather ditch our deposit and run if smoking is tolerated everywhere now.

I wouldn’t say prevalent but we ran into a few times on our last visit. When it happened we just moved to another location where the smoke wasn’t coming our way.

We noticed this too. Assumed it was just a one-off that trip. Now that it's clear that it's becoming habit, we all need to start mentioning it to staff so they know it's bothering people, and so they can prioritize stopping it. If no one is complaining, they don't know it's an issue.

Our last trip there were two guys smoking cigars on 3 consecutive nights in the jacuzzi. We said then that much more of that and we'd find somewhere else to vacation.

Here's to hoping this June is different!

OR Management... if you're listening.. you'll lose more guests by letting the smoking continue than you'll gain by turning a blind eye to it.

Yep... it's going to be important to mention while it's happening, going forward

One night on a bed around the hot tub, our neighbors in the bed next to us started smoking (all 4 of them) - I politely asked them to move somewhere else to smoke, and they put them out.

Just ask nicely and there "shouldn't" be any problems...

Just a FYI - re smoking policy at Desire and similar to almost all other resorts on the Yucatan ie: they comply with the Mexican national policy on where people can smoke

“Smoking only allowed in open areas” As this will be our first time to Desire this seems to not make a lot of sense. Other than restaurants and rooms is the whole resort not one big open area? If so then the resort is powerless to stop people from smoking anywhere they choose, hot tub, pool, bars etc. unless they have a specific non smoking rule. Am I wrong in thinking this? Smoking for us is not something we would ever choose to entertain for multiple reasons.

Disappointing. The last two vanilla resorts we visited in the fall had smoking areas designated, that is one side of the pool only.

A simple way to deal with it in the pool or hot tub is just splash, water will extinguish cigarettes and cigars  You can also ask for security to put a stop to it before you do, and they will, I know this from experience. If asking nice doesn't work getting security involved does, there are clearly marked signs in and around the pool and hot tub areas that say NO SMOKING and there is more then one designated smoking area. Smoking at the bars is one thing, in the pool and hot tub is where I draw the line, vacation or not. We are all there to enjoy ourselves and entitlement from some does not sit well on this side of the fence.

I really hope management is seeing this thread. We are newly joined members and would quickly lose interest is we have to deal with second hand smoke and vape while trying to enjoy the awesome environment there. :(

It’s all crowd dependent, just like anything else at Desire. During our last trip, I actually thought there was less cigarette smoke than usual.
