Maybe this has been answered before but I was unable to find it so here goes. I understand that you are able to put your iPhone in airplane mode and you can turn your wifi on when you do this. My question is, will I be charged for any roaming or updates if I use the phone for internet and skype while my phone is in airplane mode and wifi is turned on. I would assume no, but better safe than sorry.
Thanks.

Just keep your phone in airplane mode and connect to the resort's wi-fi. You can check emails and surf the web without any international charges.

Alternatively you can also go to settings then general then Network then turn the data roaming off. This will allow you to still receive and make phone calls. You are only charged if you answer the call and not for letting it go to voicemail.

Revised. For the past 3 years, I've used an iPhone 3G and 4 at Desire. I use AT&T. The data charges incurred receiving and sending emails and using the Internet are what you want to avoid.
Here's what I do: On your phone, Go to General, Network, Turn Enable 3G OFF (to reduce battery drain) and Turn Cellular Data OFF (also turns off Data Roaming). Turning off Data Roaming will block emails, browsing and downloads.
Go to Mail, Go to Fetch New Data and Turn Push OFF. The phone should be set to Manually at the bottom.  IF Push is  normally OFF on your phone, and Fetch is used, set it to Manually, instead of Fetch every 15 minutes, for example.
Turn Wi-Fi “ONâ€
