Using Skype to make phone calls

I know there is the option of using Skype via wifi for video chat. As long as you have wifi only on, then a charge will not take place to your cell phone account. My question is, has anyone ever used Skype to make regular phone calls. I have Skype on my Iphone 4 and according to Skype website, the rate to call a landline or cell phone in the United states is just around .03 a minute plus a .039 cent connection fee. This is way less than any other option I have seen. I am just curious if anyone has ever tried this option and if so how did it work out for you?
Thanks.

It also appears they have the option of a 2.99 a month unlimited calls to United States and Canada with the option to cancel anytime.

We used Skype from Jamaica a couple of months ago. Purchased a $10 credit to our account. Used an iPhone 4 via wifi at the hotel to call home. Worked great for the voice call. However, we were unable to retrieve messages from our old answering machine - the touch tone signals were garbled to the extent the answering machine wouldn't respond to them. Don't know if this had anything to do with the Skype connection or not. It is an inexpensive and convenient method to make calls IF you have a good wifi signal.

Thanks for the feedback. Hopefully this will serve our purpose as we will not be needing to check an answering machine. Probably will go with the 2.99 unlimited a month for the one month and then cancel. This is a great deal considering calls range anywhere from .99-1.99 a minute through Verizon.

In past trips I've also used Majic Jack successfully. Plugs in to your computer, you plug the Desire phone into it and voila! Voice quality was pretty good. Probably similar to Skype. You also have your own U.S. phone number assigned for incoming calls. Magic Jack is around $20 for the year. Last year, however, we added the Mexico package to our Verizon account and it ran about $15 for the week. Worked great for data and voice....

Hello
We as well have used Skype many times over the last few years with very few issues. I think if you do a search on here, you will find many post regarding this topic.
In short though, as long as you have a good Wifi connection, Skype works well and cost only pennies/min. We were at the resort last April, with the new Wifi repeaters they just put up on every roof top, our I phone worked well with Skype.
Have a great day.
