Just saw that this storm has very quickly grown into a hurricane, and is headed right for the Yucatan, and Cancun. Keeping all fingers & toes crossed that this doesn't cause large amounts of damage....

Rina has now been upgraded to a Cat 1 Hurricane, however it is still too early to predict where it will hit - it could be as far south as Belize or could turn north towards Jamaica and Cuba..... For those arriving this weekend you can pretty much count on some rain and wind thru the weekend in any event

First Rick, then Ike now Rina. We really have to stay away from these things. Hope all is well when we arrive Sunday

This is a good question! We were going to ask "citizens of Desire" about it... Have you ever been in such situation? I've seen very few info about it in trip reports, while it's happening every year (most likely)!

I phoned today and they only expect heavy rain and some win based on the current forecast.

That doesn't match the current forecasts I just checked. I hope their wrong but this looks like it could be a major hit very close to the resort.

We are at the resort and they have started to prepare the buildings for the storm. Meeting at 3 today. Expectation is that remaining guests will be moved out of the resort on Thursday. We moved our flight from Friday to Wednesday just to be safe.

Got a call from the resort today that they are not accepting any guests until Halloween :( So if you haven't already got a call, and are supposed to check in before Halloween...better call the resort. Rina has sure caused alot of trouble.

Looks like it is taking dead aim at Desire. We have been dealing with a family emergency in a regional hospital for three days and have paid NO attention to the news. Came home this afternoon and have been horribly surprised.

We are very worried for Desire! This will be the second time in six years that a hurricane had taken a direct aim on one of the loveliest places on earth..................

Unlike Wilma - Rina has a quite small eye of high winds - several prediction models have it passing well to the south and if this is the case Desire and Cancun would only get the shoulder of moderate winds coupled with a fair bit of rain.

24 hours from now should result in a better prediction of where it's going to hit and how bad it will be.

Lot's of prep work going on to protect ocean rooms and restaurants. Thatched roofs will take a beating for sure. Waves of rain have already started, not alot of wind. If and when an evacuation occurs guests will be moved to sister hotels in Cancun. Although some damage is likely hopefully it will not be as severe as Wilma. Storm surge must be a real issue as they have already bricked up the entrance to the buffet.

We also got a call from the resort and they said they are closing up....probably until Tuesday or Wednesday but depends on the damage. We are supposed to arrive Saturday and am afraid we will be cancelling the trip. Can't find a flight later in week. Let's hope the forecasters are wrong and the resort is spared. Our flight has not been canceled yet so we're still holding out hope.

Hello

Well lets hope for the best and no one gets hurt.

However, latest data shows the eye of the hurricane will pass well within 5 miles of the resort. At that time it is expected to be a Cat 2 or a very strong Cat 1, but most likely a 2. With that said, at least moderate damage to the property is imminent unless the track changes in the next 24 hours. Present models show the eye will pass by the resort about 1 pm Eastern Thursday.

**Update**
New data models shows Rina has turned more the the right putting more distance between the eye and the resort. Present heading will take the eye tracking inland passing about 15-20 miles now from the resort.

**Update Oct 27**
Rina is much weaker then just 24 hours ago. Looks like Desire will be more or less exposed to Tropical Storm Force Winds in the range of 60 ish mph range.
