Looking forward to our first visit to Desire, as this is also my wife's first visit to Mexico we thought we would visit some of the temples/ruins, friends or ours who stayed at Temptations a few years ago rented a car to explore, any advice on rental cars (are they available at the hotel?) or excursions would be appreciated

Yes you can rent a car for the day right at Desire.
However, a thought for you - you are spending top dollar to be at Desire why not defer your off campus excursions until another trip - on the next trip come down a few days early stay at a much cheaper resort in Cancun and do your excursions before your time at Desire.
leaving the resort???

In 14 trips to Desire we have only left the resort to visit Claudia in Puerto Morelos. Once you get there and get into the "swing" of things you will not want to leave

We agree with Coke. We pre-booked 2 days of diving on our 1st trip and it was a mistake. This time we are staying at a cheaper place in Cozumel for a few days 1st and then going to Desire.

Hello
We agree as well with Coke. However, if you do decide to rent a car, as stated above, you can do so at the resort.
We have done this once in the past and for our needs it worked out well. If I recall, the cost was about $55 ish with tax, insurance etc for a 24 hour window.

Coke is right.
But if you want to visit the big Maya sites further west, it is better to drive west during the afternoon, stay in a local hotel, and go to the sites first thing in the morning, before the tour buses get there and fill the place with large groups being rushed around, and before it gets too hot. Also, although it is expensive, get the hotel to organise your own personal guide, so that a) you hear everything that he/she says, and b) you get to go at your own pace.
Two nights in hotels and two mornings at sites will probably be enough for one visit; you can only take in so much at a time and we get culture punch drunk after two days. But then you are saving some places for the next time you visit Desire.

Just want to share our experience.
We visited Chichen Itza while in Desire and used the guys from Desire (near the pool) to arrange it. The fun part was that we had a "private group" (only desire couples) of 3 couples that went on that same tour. Fun because you get to go with like-minded and very friendly people.

That specific tour did go out very early so we arrived long before the tour buses arrived.
Not only was the tour driver awesome (and had lots of cooled beer in his car) but it's all at your own pace and you get back to Desire in time for happy hour.. (5-ish)
cheers,
K&K
