Is there long enough of beach area to get in a decent exercise walk or run? I've read that a walk on the beach to Pearl is not the greatest.

I'm here at DRM now!! The beach is short during the morning because of high tide. I ran down the road from Desire to the highway / main road and back. A nice run and I believe approx 3 miles round trip. Didn't see a single croc!!

I usually take long walks along the beach when I am at Desire RM. The beach profile is fairly flat, but it is in fact narrow in places. Obviously the width of the beach is going to vary with the tide cylcles and will be impacted by strong onshore winds. I would never attempt to walk all the way to Pearl. The walking is ok in a southerly direction to the end of Secrets Silversands. I would estimate that is about 1.5 miles each way. You can walk quite a ways heading in a northerly direction as well. Running would be a little difficult in places. Again, there are places where the beach is quite narrow and there is alot of seaweed in places, but still walkable. Desire RM has one of the better, if not the best, stretch of beach of the various resorts in the area. Some of the other resorts, namely Azul Sensatori to the south, have to deal with endless piles of beach grass that the waves bring in, and the murky water that results. The ocean bottom in front of Desire is generally all sand, usually clean, and with only some small rocks and coral below the high tide line. Several years ago Desire installed sand bag jettes on each end of the resort, plus a similar barrier a few hundred yards offshore. It has helped build up some beach sand, as the beach had previously eroded quite a bit. The beach in front of Desire is still narrow, but it is at least wide enough for the rows of palapa beds and beach loungers in front of them.

Thanks for the info! I was hoping to be able to jog on the beach, mainly so I wouldn't have to pack work-out shoes

Sounds like I'll have to do the best I can.

We have walked to Pearl from RM and we walked from Pearl to RM - both ways. It's about an hour and 15 - 30 minutes one way. We have seen folks running on the beach - but it's not very flat in many places, firm sand by the water, softer sand higher up. There is quite a long stretch between RM and Pearl that is full of seaweed. The beach from RM going the other way, opposite to going to Pearl, is a much nicer beach, but that's just my humble opinion.
I used to run and never enjoyed running in sand.
From Pearl to Puerto Morelos is a much nicer stretch of beach to walk and/or run than between RM and Pearl.

There are crocs right out front at the entrance. The staff feed them daily.

I've wondered what happens to the occasional drunken, ill-behaving guests.

Follow up to my previous post. I really like to exercise and did so on the first day with my run to the end of the road and back. I felt totally safe and never had any concern. Every other day I was too worn out to do any real exercise from the previous late nights. If you really want to go for a run do it before the sun crests so on your way back it's not too hot. The sun rises over the beach and once it hits you in the face you'll be sweating bullets (I live in Sacramento where it is hot from April thru October). Get your exercise in a day or two then prepare for all the fun you'll have!!! Time of our life!!
