We stayed at an incredible place in Cancun, before our last trip to Pearl. It's called Nizuc, and it is at the south end of the Cancan "strip" ( not near Isla Mujeres). Incredible food, service and ambience. It is rather secluded as far as Cancun goes ; we were even able to sunbath in the nude on our deck as a "warm up" to Pearl :-).

I HIGHLY recommend staying on Isla Mujeres. During the day hordes of obnoxious ugly Americans invade, but they mostly leave by dinnertime and that's when the island really gets nice. In my experience Isla Mujeres is a great value and has incredible ambiance. The places there tend to be smaller and not mega-hotels, but I think it's way better than Cancun. YMMV!

As a side note, if you're staying elsewhere before/after your Desire trip, you can basically get a free day by arriving early and leaving late. If you want the best bang for your buck, stay someplace cheap after your flight in and go to Desire first thing in the morning, and book a cheap night on the tail end and you can totally get away with leaving late in the evening, all without paying for an extra night. I know it sounds cheap, but plenty of couples do it ;) Don't overdo it or they might start policing us...

Official checkout time is 11:00 am (but that just means that you have to be out of your room and have done the front desk checkout) - your generally welcome to stay on property until you have to leave for the airport(whatever time that occurs in the day.

You can check in any time that you arrive and immediately begin to start enjoying what Desire has to offer, however if it's busy you generally won't get your room assigned to you until around 3pm.

You can arrive and leave any time. I've arrived as early as as 9AM and left as late as 9pm. We have friends that once left after 11pm. TECHNICALLY check-in is some time around like 3pm, but they'll hold your bags and let you access the resort as soon as you get there. Check out is I think noon (maybe 11?), after which time your room key will not work. You can prop the door open for a little extra time, but once housekeeping comes through you need to be out of there. Again, they'll hold your bags and you retain access to the resort. When you take your bags to the lobby and "check out" they'll take your wristband (so don't leave the grounds!) but not having the wristband won't keep you from getting any of the same services.

I don't know the exact check in/out times, mostly because I just don't care. I'm not at Desire for the "luxurious" room, I'm there for the pool, the jacuzzi, the beach, the food, the drinks and most importantly the fun atmosphere and all the fun people we meet; having my bags stored with the valet versus sitting in my room doesn't really make any difference to me.
