Looks like we will be returning the 3rd week of August. Anyone have suggestions on companies you have used for travel insurance.
Thanks in advance.

Tanman,

Whereabouts do you live ? If its in Canada, I have some good suggestions for you as I just purchased mine last weekend for our upcoming trip in 21 Days (Yahoo :D !!!! :D ). If its not, well then none of my ideas would be that helpful to you  .

With more and more people having their benefits cancelled due to the "economic downturn", this will become more important for more people

We always get a policy at insuremytrip.com - it has come in handy 2 times in our 11 trips to Desire - once when we were evacuated 4 days into our 10-day trip due to a hurricane, and once for a family sickness.

Get the good kind, not the $49 variety. They usually run at about 10% of the total trip cost. We go in August (hurricane season) and over NYE each year - having the peace of mind is well worth the cost.

Heck, having them pay for emergency airline tickets twice more than makes up for the costs overall.

we have purchased from both Travel Guard & CSA. We got our air refunded from CSA without problem after one of the hurricanes destroyed the resort. We look more at the medical limits within the policies before making a decision. An air-ambulance to get you back to the states is a six figure service, so that is even more important than lost luggage, etc. The medical limits are also important since your health insurance usually won't cover out of the coverage & Mexican hospitals are going to ask for cash up front in some cases. Rates are also dependent on your age at the time of travel. Good luck & enjoy your trip. M&M

we've never had ANY vacation in the past 12 years where we haven't had to consider the bad health of an immediate family member (parents, etc.) when going on a trip anywhere. That was our first consideration in getting good travel insurance, we knew sooner or later our number would come up and the call would come in, and it did.

In the past few years, my husband's health has been a concern also - we had two hospitalizations in the last year for him - we continue to book our trips, but make sure we have insurance!

As a couple of others have mentioned, it is important to get "good" travel insurance and not go with the best rate. Especially if you are concerned about a hurricane interrupting your trip. Most policys are very vague about what exactly they cover so you need to learn to understand their "code". Here is a very good explanation of some of the important factors when it comes to selecting trip insurance in relation to hurricane coverage:
Hurricane insurance tips:
1- No insurance covers absolutely everything that could happen when a hurricane hits or you need to be evacuated. New “Hurricane Warningâ€

Travel Protection

Postby Darcy » Mon Jan 25, 2010 6:38 am

Hi, We usually book our Desire trips through Travel Impressions tour company which offers cancellation or changing of travel dates trip protection for ANY reason (no questions asked) until time of departure and also coverage while at the resort. It only cost $90 per person. I had to use it once without any problems. The land portion will be the same no matter where you book. They also offer air/land packages. Travel Impressions includes reasonably priced transfers, but you can eliminate them if you want. You will need to book through a travel agency. Travel Impressions is owned by American Express so you get perks if you use your AX card. The website is www.travimp.com
