Swine flu ?

This is the place for general questions / general discussion about Desire Riviera Maya

I'm watching news right now. Lots of stuff in New York is shutting down, a school shut down in Sacramento, 180 miles north of us. We fly to Jamaica May 8-16th and so far that's safe but as another poster said, the airplanes can be very contagious. Just wait and watch I guess.

Supposed to arrive on Saturday May 2nd, how many cancellations have there been for next week?
Does anyone have the numbers?
Desire at half or one third full would not be as fun.

This is a very sad day,
We booked our trip over a year ago and it is now ended.
This is the second time in two bookings we had to cancel firts the strorm and now the "AIR" It is with much regret that we cancel our trip. I wish we could get the truth about how bad things are or could be instead of all the Bull#$%^. We hope to return very soon.

Just as an FYI,Since our flights got cancelled on Air Canada, I called direct to the resort this morning and was given 3 options

1) Have 100% of my $$ put into a credit file for rescheduling at a future date.
2) Reschedule immediately with Zero $$ penalty
or
3) Cancel entirely and get all of our $$ refunded less a $80.00 admin fee

Considering that Desire has done nothing wrong (or any other resort for that matter. They are just as much a victim as are we), I felt this was a very very fair way to treat the guests. THEY DIDNT REALLY HAVE TO DO ANYTHING BUT THEY DID !
Needless to say, I rebooked while i had them on the phone for the 3rd week of June (I am optimistic that the media will have sunk there teeth into something else by then)

The resort is definitely going to financially suffer thru this crap , so the more of us that can support them the better.

The good news is that we get to leave our bags packed and start our countdown all over again. And that can never be a bad thing !

44 Days !!

NObody has been hospitalized here in Canada and some of the people with it confirmed didn't even know they had it , and are totally fine now ! THIS IS JUST ONE MORE THING THAT THE F#$&%N! MEDIA IS BLOWING OUT OF PROPORTION !!! We live in Toronto and remember the truth about SARS. NOT NEARLY the issue it was made out to be !!

We are in no way worried about catching the swine flu. Our problem though is that we are supposed to arrive on this Thursday, but the Canadian gov is now "considering" a travel restriction to Mexico. GREAT !!! What happens if we go and our flight home gets cancelled ?? As much as we would love to stay at Desire for as long as we can, I dont think that would go over well with our 3 young kids....

I have sent an email to Mia as well, but expect that she is fielding MANY calls today. Our reservation is not insured for this type of thing. Does anyone have any ideas on Desires point of view regarding reservations affected by this crap ??

By the way, I cant find anything about this being a problem in Cancun itself and Mexico city is a Long way from Cancun ! 1298 Kms away! (Thats over 800 miles to our Yankee friends  )

We better all stop leaving our houses in the morning and just curl up in the fetal position and wait for armageddon. Talk about a downer 72 hours from departure !!

Great post !!!!! I did not hear that the so called swine flu. No one has said that when the doctors looked under the micro scope it said made in mexico. How do we really know it did not start here in the US. Every time somthing bad happens the governmet blames it on a so called third world country. This report is put out by our government. Do you belive our governmet. I say f%#k the governmet. Mexico is a beautiful country with beautiful people and there health care system is better than ours.

This is just a US ploy to shit on mexico. I am tired of the us shiting on mexico, canada, cuba, france and any other country that has a better health care system than us. I will be going to desire in august no matter what!!!

Steve,

Sweet! Maybe we'll get a free upgrade to oceanview!!! We'll have a good time regardless, i mean how bad can it be laying naked on the beach with your honey :) So the resort is half full, I guess the service will be top notch then and no fighting for pool chairs or beach beds. A few cervezas with lime and we'll be fine!!!!

upgrades

Desirecouple2,
Can you tell me what I have to do to get an upgrade to Oceanview?
We would love an oceanview, but didn't want to spend the extra to get it!!!
We will be there May 16th unless the flights cancel. Hubby says he doesn't care if noone else goes, he is going to enjoy himself!!
We stocked up on Zicam nasal swabs, Zinc lozenges, Airborn (which you take before the plane ride), and oscillococcinum (a homeopathic flu remedy), and I also got two rounds of the Tamiflu from the doc., just in case. We plan to bring bottles of hand sanitzer to carry in our bags. So we will be healthier at Desire than we are at home. Still trying to decide if we will wear masks in the airport.
LOL!!!!!!!!!! Just reread my email, and we sound like crazy people. We are not normally stressed about things like this.
Oh well, just trying to be safe. We don't want to cancel our vacation!! Friends and family here in Texas are aghast that we would even think about traveling to Mexico, and they don't even know about the swinger part of it. So we will be there and we are going to party naked!

Back from Desire and NO Swine flu

Postby desirecouple2 » Thu May 14, 2009 8:58 am

Desire May2-7 and No sign of the swine flu, just like we thought.

Can't believe the hype people, don't believe everything you hear from the media. We spoke with our dr. before the trip and he said it was blown out of proportion and to go and enjoy the trip.

We think it was the Obama machine trying to drum up fear and support for his nationalized/socialist healthcare system. Anyway we had great time!!!

1st time there was plenty of hot fresh bacon on the breakfest buffet :)

I see that today, Saturday, the British Government has withdrawn the travel advice to avoid Mexico if possible, and now say it is safe to go there.

It seems to have virtually disappeared from the headlines in Canada as well. Not much of a surprise !

The only problem we are running into now is that Air Canada (THEY SUCK !!!) has now cancelled all weekday flights throughout June and we have had to cut short our trip that we rebooked for mid June. They say the reason is lack of demand. IMAGINE THAT ! Kind of a self-fulfilling prophesy Eh ?

Anyways, wild horses could not stop us from getting there ,this time, on 6-13 even if we had to drive (Holy crap. Think of How long that would take from Toronto ?) We'd better leave now !

27 More days !!

you aren't the only ones! Our friends had scheduled May 31st for 7 days, flying USA 300 from Cinci and their flights were cancelled due to demand for seats!

Sooooooo, they have had to reschedule also - they didn't want anything other than a nonstop flight.
