safety

Postby backagain417 » Thu Jul 26, 2018 8:19 pm

We have just booked our 5th trip to RM for Aug 2019. The last time we were there we went through the hurricane that destroyed the resort and prompted the renovations. Needless to say the trip was a disaster and we haven't been able to get back till now. Question is, is the trip from the airport still as seamless as it was then? Considering the recent safety concerns in Cancun area. We have never had any issue and hope its still the same...Thank you all

So you haven't been back since Hurricane Wilma in Oct. 2005 !!!!

I think you will notice a lot of changes to the resort - all to the good

no not 2005....there was a bad hurricane in 2014 i believe...the gym collapsed and the pool area was wrecked....they then changed the pool and built the swim up pool bar.

The Cancun and Riviera Maya area has only been hit by two major hurricanes: Gilbert on September 15, 1988 and Wilma on October 21, 2005.

The pool renovation, swim up bar and lunch restaurant renovation that happened in 2014 where all planned upgrades(ie not due to any storm damage issues)

The closest storm that came to Desire in 2014 would have been Tropical Storm Hanna. We were at Desire Pearl in 2012 when Hurricane Ernesto hit. That did some damage, mainly to the beach and pallapas, but nothing major.

Hurricane Rina hit in October 2011 which flooded the road into RM and Pearl. There were crocodiles on the beach and in the kitchen and the bridge into RM was underwater. The resort did reopen on October 30th or Halloween. We had to shift travel arrangements around but it all worked out even though it was the one time I forgot to buy trip insurance. That said I don't believe there was any damage to the gym, just a bit of debris and a lot of water.

I also got one good tip from that trip. You can book travel insurance and be covered right up until the storm is named, after it's named all bets are off.

The roads in May were great but the cab driver did say some days there can be a long delay on the highway. It is what it is.

FYI - Rina was downgraded to a Tropical Storm well before it got close to the Yucatan peninsula, which is why there minimal effects from that one.

Again....we were there and witnessed the damage. But the topic of this was post was completely misunderstood and taken on a side track.

It's as safe as driving through any city in the US. As long as you stay away from drugs and people that buy/sell drugs you shouldn't have any problems (just like the US). We rented a car last summer and drove to Desire then down the coast for a few days and the scariest part was the tourists riding scooters swerving through traffic lol!

Your best bet is to purchase the transfers from USA transfers (mentioned on the main page of these forums). You go through customs, walk out of the airport, ignoring all the time share people and look for the USA folks. It's an 18 minute trip to the resort...usually completely seamless.
