Beach at Desire RM

We are thinking of scheduling our first trip this August. Wondering what the beach situation is like. I KNOW you don't go to a place like this for just the beach! BUT... We would both like romantic, sexy time on the beach, but have heard that it is not all that great. Seaweed, rocks, lookey-loos just walking by on the beach gawking (but we don't mind fellow resorters watching if the opportunity arises ;-). Can anyone who has been recently in 2018 give us any updates on the current beach situation.

Thank you in advance...

This year it's been basically unusable (according to many reports) seaweed by the ton, and smelly.

Sorry :(

We were there in June. The seaweed was bad for the most part. It varied on how bad it was. None of the areas that we walked on were rocky, but we didn't spend much time in the ocean or walking the beach. There were several men on the beach that would try to get your attention so they could sell you stuff. We ignored those guys. They didn't seem to be around as bad in the evening. Also had some "lookey-loos" walking by. A couple of times we did what we could to make them blush.

Just got home from Pearl yesterday. The seaweed (or Sargasso grass) was a horrible problem. It lined the entire beach from Puerto Morelos all the way north to Riviera Maya as far as we were willing to walk. The smell was terrible one day, but not bad the next. It was unpredictable, so I can't explain that. I can't fault the resort, they did the best they could by raking it up. Some of the massive vanilla resorts just north of Pearl actually had tractors out trying to remove it mechanically. They still had tons of it to deal with due to their much larger beach exposure. I'm not sure what the conditions are that created this problem, but it's obviously very wide spread up and down the coast.

Any idea if the seaweed problem will be better or worse in December? We are not going primarily for the beach but we both love the seaside so it would be rather disappointing...

The sargassum will not go away any time soon. We were in RM mid July and had one day with very little seaweed, many folks were out in the water rafting and walking. Next day the water from the beach line to the buoys was covered in seaweed. The bottom at RM is not smooth, some seaweed and craters so watch your step. For those that want an real time picture I have been using earthcam.com. Search for 2 sites there: Billy's Rest. and the Casa Toucan. Both are in Puerto Morelos. Looks like it is raining there today.

We always go in November and the grass is usually not a problem by then.

I saw an article that was saying the Mexican government is going to start working on catching the sea grass before it gets to the beaches, which will be wonderful. They were supposed to start doing this at then end of last week. Here's hoping that by October all will be good on the beaches.

DRM The only real "beach" is opposite the pool. that's where they play beach volleyball. The rest of the property has from about 8' of beach to 3' of beach depending on the tide. If you go for big white sand beaches you may be disappointed. However the resort more than makes up for that.
Unfortunately that's the story all long the coast. The seaweed has only been a big problem for about 6 years. The good news is that the water is beautiful, the beach beds are comfy ;) and the weather is usually awesome. :bj
