Seaweed Problem

Hi Group,
My girlfriend and I were there early July and they totally lost control of the beach. The smell and amount of seaweed was not controllable. Has anyone been there lately? Is the problem the same ? Of course I know it is mother nature but they once had a beautiful beach and it is a shame it is no longer usable. We are thinking about going again in Oct and thought maybe the seaweed was seasonal? If anyone knows please respond. Thanks.

Hello, as far as I know they have just implemented a system to catch all the seaweed out in the ocean by putting a Barrier similar to how they contain oil spills . Hopefully this will solve the problem because when we went in April it was really bad.

We've had good and bad experiences with seaweed depending on the weather over the course of our dozen or so visits to Desire.

We will be at RM the last week of August, so we can report back after that.

We just came back yesterday. The weeds are still a problem. You may want to stay away from the water.

Thanks for the update. It is a shame because it once was a really nice beach.

it was and is a nice beach other than the seaweed issue. Given the fact the Atlantic, Caribbean and Gulf are overrun with it I guess to avoid seaweed it would be necessary to go to the Pacific or Mediterranean or elsewhere. I doubt we'll find a comparable Desire experience so personally we're still onboard :D :D

So we just got back from another great trip...and yeah the seaweed was pretty bad BUT there may be some good news on the horizon....We read about an initiative that the Mexican Govt was taking to solve the issue (It's killing tourism) whereby they're installing catch nets off shore to prevent the seaweed from reaching land - this is already working in the Hotel Zone in Cancun and according to Rene at the beach, they have just started to work on the riviera Maya area.. fingers crossed

I hope so also. Its a shame because it really was a very nice beach 4 years ago. Also I found they lost a lot of the sand. The beach was much longer 4 years ago as well. The storms last year may have moved the sand to other areas.

We went in January and was not a problem, but when we went back in June - it was horrible (first time in our trips to see it like that)

We were just there and on the day we left, the water cleared right up! It was a wreck all of the other days though. So it really does seem to change overnight.

Here are a couple photos taken at RM Jul, 2018, the 1st one is Jul 17th, the water was great, the next one is Jul 20th, what a mess. One never knows what the beach will look like. Its a hit and miss what it will look like while you are there. The RM staff and temp's did a great job cleaning it up as fast as they could. They bag it up then load it on an all terrain 4 wheeler.
