Personally the quality of the beach is always a major factor for us visiting a resort (we're not so into pools). What is the beach like at Desire and how does it compare with the Hedo's (and any other clothing optional resorts for that matter....)

The beach has always been a major draw to Cancun, but unfortunately, the last couple of years has not been kind to it at Desire. The expansion of all the beach beds has lessened the area to begin with, but The recent hurricane Ida that passed by has seriously eroded the beach. So much in fact that during high tide,(early afternoon) the water was actually hitting the stairs and supports of our beach bed. This makes for difficult work for Rene and Afrika on the beach as they are dodging the waves

We were told the plan was to work on the beach in the spring and try to get it relevelled and back to it former pristine condition. We'll see.......

Do not however expect it to Rival the beaches in Negril, Jamaica. They are far nicer in our opinion.

We found the beach very disappointing at Desire.

We, too, are beach people and we walk the beach for hours. Took us about an hour and a half to walk to Puerto Morelos. The beaches beyond the confines of Desire are much better (wider), but then, they don't have the beach beds like Desire does right at the shoreline.

Take water shoes if you want to go in the water - there are LOTS of rocks out there and you can't see them or avoid them.

There is also lots of sea grass that gets washed up along the shoreline (as well as garbage) - but the workers work very diligently raking it up on a regular basis.

Having said that, the beach beds are the best place to hang all day. It really is beautiful and relaxing to just lie there with your honey.

It will be interesting to see if there are any changes to the beach when we go back next year.

The beach is not the greatest, but it's WAY better than Hedo III nude side and I didn't run across too much in the way of rocks, either, especially compared to Caliente Caribe. Way more rocks & seaweed off the Desire beach than on.

To us, the only real drawback of the beach at Desire when we were there was the stinging jellyfish that were in the surf line towards late afternoon. They did a real number on me. That was in fall of 2009.
On the other hand, I was in Jamaica this past spring, and the jellyfish were bad there, too.

We are NOT beach people. We spend the day at the pool or at best on the beach beds. In 12 or 13 trips, we've probably been in the water (ocean) twice. That said, the beach last trip (Jan) was the worst we've ever seen it. The hurricanes have really decimated the beach. I think it's the worst of any of the party places we frequent. However, to us, the quality of the beach is not a major distraction from why we go to Desire.

Yep, this past Jan/Feb was not good, the water at times was lapping up against the beach bed steps....

Sounds like they need to invest in a beach renourishment project. We do that all the time in Florida. It's not cheap, but it's better than moving the resort landward.

The issue is a little more complex in Mexico. All beach fronts in Mexico are Federal Property (not private) - if Desire wanted to spend the money to do this they would first have to apply for several Federal permits including the Mexican equivalent of the EPA - which would of course demand an extensive impact study before even considering it - and finally if the request made it thru all these admin hurdles all the work would have to be performed by a contractor that that was approved by both the Feds and the QRoo state authorities

Not saying it might not happen but ..........

Apparently you've never met the US Army Corps of Engineers and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. A typical Section 404 permit + ERP can take up to a year if they are not politically motivated.
From what I know about Mexico you just have to put cash in a sack.
