Wife and I went to Desire July 27th to August 2nd, 2011. It would be easier to tell you to look up last year’s trip report since it was another great trip. However, what fun would that be?
Got into Cancun at 3:40pm. We usually like to get there before noon. However, it was cheaper for us to take a later flight and spend an extra night then to take the early morning flight and only spend five nights. Could not figure how that works, but I was not going to argue. Customs and Immigrations went smoothly. Got the green light and out we went. The time share folks must have been wore out since it was so late. We did not have anyone approach us. Went outside and found the USA Transfer employee. After a brief conversation he escorted us to the van and we were pulling into the Desire at 5pm.
We had done the express check in. However, he could not find our paperwork. Starting to get a little nervous, then he found it attached to another guest paperwork. After that check-in went smooth. We got our champagne while he finished up with everything. Not a big fan of putting the Desire wristbands on the wrist. We liked them better on our ankles. We were told, that past guests were ordering special dinners and such and then charging them to other rooms. Management was hoping this would stop that. However, the numbers on our wristbands had faded off by the third day. After a very quick speech on what was new at the resort, off to the room. Did not get the room we wanted, however the room we got was at least in the same building. Dropped our stuff and made it to happy hour in the Jacuzzis. Found some friends from our past trips and met some new friends.
Food was just as good as usual. We are not big breakfast eaters. However, I did make it to breakfast every morning. And when there are tamales on the buffet, I consider that a score for breakfast. Lunch was good. I did think they had a few more Mexican dishes offered at lunch. Which again, I think is great. We don’t go to Mexico to eat American food. Dinner was outstanding. I had some white tuna that was out of this world. We did not have a bad meal. And service at all the meals, we can not even describe the quality of service that we received it was that great. The last night we special ordered the lobster and steak. All I can say is WOW. Well worth the extra money.
The Entertainment staff did a good job keeping activities going at the pool. The pool seemed pretty mellow during the day. The DJ was playing some upbeat music, some was from Spanish singers. And again that is great. It was cool to listen to Pit Bull or Daddy Yankee while hanging out at the pool. Sylvia did another great job keeping the drinks flowing while hanging out in the pool.
About 5pm everyone started going toward the hot tub. That is the meeting point of the day. There were a few body shots going on. A couple of girls had a little too much to drink the first day. But, they were not crazy out of control causing a disturbance drunk. The water in the hot tub was perfect the entire time during our stay. At night the hot tub was pretty calm.
There was a take over while we were there. A take over always makes me a little nervous. The APG group was great. You would have never known they were there. It did not matter if you were part of their group or not, they would visit with you and include everybody into the fun they were having.
We did run into a few hiccups while we were there. It rained a little. Well, the most I have ever seen it rain at one time while in Mexico. You can not blame anyone for that. You have to make the best out of it. So, we just sat in the hot tub and drank. It worked out for us. Another thing was the wife had a stomach bug that took her out of service for about 24 hours. Do I think it was caused by the Mexican water, or bad food preparation? No, we did not do anything different then we have done in any of our past trips. I just think it was one of those things. We have been in three different airports that day we arrived. Been in a couple of others a couple of days before that. I think she just picked something up. The lack of sleep and the alcohol just let the bug take over. It just kept her down for 24 hours and she was ready to go again. It also got me a little, not as bad. I just had to call it an early night once.
Desire is what you want to make out of it. You can sit around and complain because you don’t get what you think you deserve, or you can make the best out it and still have a good time. I watched a New York Yankees fan sit and drink pink watermelon Martinis with my wife in the rain. Really, Powderfinger do you think I was not going to mention that? Watched a lady go up to the bar and request something different to drink. The bartender made her a special drink. Within 24 hours half the resort was drinking it. That is just how friendly the resort is. Everyone talks, visits and hangs out. But, if you just want some quite time, you can get that also.
Meet a lot of great people. We visited with great couples from Canada, New York, Georgia and several other places. And it was nice to see our friends from pervious trips.
So, will we be returning???? Let’s just say I am waiting for the airlines to open up the schedules for July 2012.
