Live trip report, March 24-29

Postby 2good4better » Wed Mar 24, 2010 4:11 pm

Well, we're here.

It was an uneventful flight from Chicago straight to Cancun. About 1 1/2 hours after our plane reached the gate we were checking in. There was a really long line after picking up our checked baggage going into the part of immigration where you press the button for the green or red light. Once we got past that it was smooth sailing to the resort.

Since we arrived at about 1:00PM our room was not ready but that was no big deal as we just hung out at the lobby bar and ran into some people that we knew from previous trips.

From just a cursory glance, it looks like the playroom is now located in the open area by the lobby bar. It looks like a tent with curtains for doors. From the lobby bar we could see that they added an outdoor patio at the upstairs disco level.

We'll try to throw out a few posts during our stay. If anyone needs any questions answered feel free to ask.

Thanks for making the extra effort to post from the resort. We know how hard it is to do after you get into the desire routine !
We look forward to hearing more about the new disco layout if you get the chance to take a look.

Yes -- and, if you can, a picture of the work in progress on the disco would be great!

Thanks for your report. Have fun!

Disco remodeling update.

Last night Desire let our group have a meet & greet inside the new disco. While all the work wasn't completed we saw the inside and we were amazed. They have done an incredible job and the new disco looks nothing like it did before. It's much brighter and modern looking. There are palapa beds along the sides of the room and the bar, instead of being along one wall as before, is now circular.

The DJ booth is in approximately the same place as before but the playroom is now on the side of the disco opposite the DJ booth. The new playroom isn't ready for good times just yet but it has a much more upgraded feel than the old one did.

Another addition to the disco is a new balcony right where the side entrance was/is. If you come up the outside stairs there is the same hallway as before but there is a sliding door that opens on to the balcony. This has a long table and chairs.

According the information we have received, the new disco will make it's grand opening either this Friday or Saturday.

That sounds really nice. I think having an open air patio will be a nice addition. Have you heard at all what/If they have done to the Air conditioning as part of the reno ? Has it all been upgraded as well ??

Thanks so much for the first-hand knowledge. Hope you have a great time while your there!

BTW, congrats on being "member of the month" :D

I hope the outside patio will be the "designated smoking area" instead of that narrow hallway at the top of the stairs that everyone liked to enjoy their smokes in. Everyone, that is, except me! Cough, cough, wheeze! .

When we were in the disco the air conditioning was not completely installed yet so it was not running.

While we can't take a picture, the computer rendering of the disco that was posted somewhere before looks pretty close to the final product.

The additional patio may be a smoking section but we don't know. That actually may be a good idea.

Regardless, the refurbished disco is supposed to open tonight. If this internet connection is stable we'll try to post something.

We have to say that the temporary playroom near the lobby has worked out really well. It's spacious and can accommodate a lot more people than the old one upstairs. The new playroom off the disco looks like it may be slightly bigger than the old one. Also, there is a sex swing there for those that want to try that.

The beach bed/pool chair reservation system was different than in years past. You actually reserve these things for the day with the staff. This surprised us when we went out to the pool after breakfast and saw most chairs open. It turned out that every single one was already taken. A couple of the beach beds were still available so we stayed there yesterday.

Food so far has been good. About the same level as in past years. After two nights we have only eaten dinner at the buffet restaurant.

The weather has been mostly sunny during the day with warm temperatures. It's gotten a bit cloudy in the afternoon but the only rain was on our first day and that didn't last very long.

We just returned home tonight. There would have been more posts but there were problems with Desire's internet access. I could browse to any web site but any time I went to one that required a log on (this site, my web-based e-mail, etc.) the connection kept timing out. This required constant re-logging on and entering user name and password. At one point I would log in and get the log in screen again. It's like the connection was being refreshed constantly. Maybe some computer-savy readers have an answer.

Anyway, the new disco officially opened on Friday night. The remodeling job turned out great and the atmosphere of the place was much improved over the old place. The playroom has a much more classy feel as well. The music was about the same as before and will appeal to some but not to others.

I would like to comment on the complaints some have made about bug bites. On this trip, like our previous ones, we did not get any bites. Others in our group did complain of bites so the problem must be person-specific. There was a worker with a fogger out every evening about 6 o'clock. This made the whole resort smell like kerosene for about half an hour. We also had some very tiny ants in our room that never seemed to completely go away.

While there is still enough beach to walk along, there is much less sand than there was five years ago.

There are now TVs at the lobby bar and the lunch buffet area to distract you from all the naked people. :D

Thanks so much for your great, up to the minute report!

What would folks want to watch on TV at the lobby bar and lunch buffet? And who controls the remote control?

I think the TVs are a good idea in the bar and lunch area - people that like to follow sports will now have a place to watch big playoff games (superbowl, basketball playoffs, soccer games, etc) and have a drink or two or three! Previously, the only place to watch was in the room! People that don't follow sports may not agree, but I have seen plenty of posts here and on Yahoo Desire sites that reference the need to have access to the TV for a special game.
