Trip Report Nov.19-29, 2012

Postby miabob » Mon Dec 31, 2012 11:39 am

Finally got time to get this little trip report done. We were on our 8th trip to Desire from Nov. 19 to 29.

There have been recent positive changes. The disco has been renovated, with the beds being removed (sorry, you will now have to drop into the sin room right next door!). There is now a quite comfortable bench all around the outside walls of the room with loose footstools?, low seats in front of the bench. The display which occupied much of the area in front of the washrooms is no more. There is a completely new dance floor which is lit from below with colored lights which change with the music. This new floor is only about 4 inches above the main level—less chance of injuring oneself… Overall the renovations have produced an area which seems several times bigger than the old setup.

Room renovations were occurring with new mirrors, night tables, headboards, even new mattresses in some cases. Our neighbors went home and immediately the crew descended on their vacated room with paints and new furnishings. The thatch roofs have been redone.

The evening entertainment seems to be a bit improved with more zip to it. Beach bed mattresses were being replaced to give more bounce?
Jacuzzi beds have been returned to their original positions on the lower level. The “dentist” chairs are back on the upper level by the Jacuzzi. This pattern meant more beds were in use and not taken up with people’s towels and clothes.

The staff were giving their usual great service. Supervisors were checking with patrons that everything was okay with food quality.
The buffet was very good and hit excellent on American Thanksgiving with the turkey being carved. The stuffing was absolutely delicious.

As usual, towels were plentiful. The resort apparently has 2400 towels for 120 rooms and we sure used our share.Guests were from all over the world from places like Russia, the Ukraine, England, Australia and even Canada and the U.S.

Big problem with bugs this trip. They even bit under socks, and were never to be seen. Definitely not mosquitoes—saw only 2 of them on the whole trip. Applications of “OFF” helped but those bites swelled up, itched, and were unsightly. The grounds were being sprayed each night but…

Thought the best service was at the Lobby Bar when one night the drinks we ordered were delivered with the spray can of bug repellent. As best we could figure, the Lobby Bar was where most of the bites seemed to happen…

The Lobby Bar was sure quiet at 4 a.m. as we sat having coffee while waiting for the airport transfer—very early departure as we were off to Australia as part 2 of this holiday.

Each trip to Desire is fantastic and we always return on the next trip wondering if it will match. Each succeeding trip has even better!

nice report....good to hear from fellow veterans who will leave out all the extra mumbo jumbo and get to the point...we are coming for our 4th trip....we had some bug issues with RM last time as well and at the lobby bar too....our guess is this.......ever since they built that extra lobby just outside the main lobby, it stopped the natural flow of the wind which would keep things flowing including the insects. The humidity at the lobby bar was raised and bugs seemed to settle there. That was the only place we had issues with bugs.

Am sitting at the Lobby Bar now (New Years Day morning) on last day of 7th Desire Cancun trip.

Glad to report that we have not run into any bugs this time. It just seems to be luck of the draw - was here at the same time last year and suffered terrible bites from the sand fleas.

Agree with the rest of your comments on the state of the resort and the service (excellent as always!)

Very curious about the atmosphere on NYE at Desire....how was it? Thinking of doing that at some point.

Hard to distinguish since mosts nights at Desire are like NYE, but to be fair, the resort does go all out with a special dinner (gifts for the ladies) and entertainment, even a few fire works. The place is usually full and the partying/dancing continues even later than ususal.

We've now been twice between Christmas and New Years, and many of the same couples come back at that time yearly - a very good, lively crew. The only drawback is the price ($$$!!!) that Desire charges for this prime time...

Thanks for the report. Has the playroom/Sin Room been renovated as well, or just the disco? There had been speculation on here earlier that the playroom was also being renovated.

Great feedback (miabob).

We are heading for our 6th trip in March 13....we just love the place!!

Its a little odd.....on our previous 5 trips, we suffered bites only once...but quite badly!!....all other visits have been fine.

Question: Did you have any issues with the management trying to re-locate you to Pearl??.
This was quite a big issue last April.!! A large number of returning guests were informed upon arrival, that they were being moved to PEARL which wasn't received too well..and resulted in one or two disputes!!. I guess it was because, that PEARL had just launched that week, and they were trying to promote the resort. I think they mis-judged the reaction they would receive from the regular returning guests and we bumped into many of the guests, who had come back from PEARL telling us of the 'mix-up'. We were lucky and held out for our room at RM.

We are almost a year on....so I guess PEARL has 'taken off' by now!!.....but of course, it was an 'un-known' at the time.

Glad to hear that the rooms had received a little TLC..!!...and Thanks for the warning about the hot tub....although we have never had a problem....makes perfect sense.

Safe journey to all those visiting Desire this year.....maybe see you on the beach....

We forgot to mention in our original report that there are curtains between the beach beds--made of some heavy material.
We personally did not like them because they narrowed the view of the ocean/beach to the width of the bed. They also impeded the view of activities on other beds -- always a turn on. They also blew over you when windy. The curtains can be tied up and most people did this. If you were booking an oceanfront room, you would now get this mass of canvas blocking your view of the ocean. The one positive thing was that they narrowed the view by the "textiles" wandering--certainly cuts down on their thrills.
Other comments are most welcome--this was just how we found them.
