A & M's story. It's a little long, but it's good and fair, and I hope answers some of the questions we had before this trip, our very first to the Desire Riviera Maya.

We're in our 30's and first timers to Desire RM. We've been to a couple of the mega resorts in the Mayan Riviera and wanted to try something different, and after some research (and forum lurking) were excited to give Desire a try. After 8 days, an amazing experience, and a ton of new friends we'll definitely be back. Read-on for our story.

We arrived at Desire with some friends around 4:00 and went through a pretty normal check-in. Really normal, actually. Welcoming staff, easy check-in, some champagne, wedding reception at the front… wait, is that her wedding dress?! Wow! Oh, and some annoying (but expected) membership pitch. Thank-you (Russian?) wedding couple, your beautiful bride was our first true introduction to a CO resort, and definitely one of the memories we won't soon forget!

Most of our first day was getting acquainted with DRM's unofficial schedule. By the time we'd unpacked, showered, and caught-up with our friends it was 6:00 so we wandered to the lobby bar and grabbed a drink. It was pretty dead (this is prime hot tub time, but we didn't know it yet!), so we wandered around, grabbed a couple family-safe pics, and went for Sushi. Pretty empty everywhere so we enjoyed our friend's company, plus made a mental note to come back another day for Teppanyaki after hearing the cheers coming from behind the fish tank.

We finished dinner, then headed back through the lobby around 8:30 and finally started getting in sync to where the crowd was. Our friends stuck around for a drink while we went to get our theme outfits on. By the time we got back they introduced us to some people they'd met. Things picked-up from there: we met a ton of interesting couples by the bar, the show was exciting, the liquor was top-shelf and free-flowing, the "playmakers" (entertainment staff) were scurrying about introducing people, and the atmosphere was very fun. There wasn't much of a show that night since the main event was Chippendales at the disco, but it was a great time seeing and meeting a lot of people. Probably 80 or so, around half dressed in theme, all having a great night.

Then it was disco time. We missed most of the Chippendales show, but being there for the dancing was definitely worth it. We danced (her), pretended we could (him), got treated like rockstars at the bar, made some friends on the dance floor, and danced and touched and made-out like were back in college… if people wore (only) fishnet outfits and danced to a lot of Pitbull when we were in college :). It was a lot of fun, and really hot. After a while we decided to get out of our comfort zone and try the playroom, so we grabbed each other's hands, snaked around the crowd, took a right by a lit hallway…

… and promptly ended up outside. Hey, there's a sign for the jacuzzi, that's totally where we meant to go!

Up the stairs determined more than ever to have some sexy time in public. We were one of the first couples at the jacuzzi so it was clothes-off and a little time to take-in our first evening. We kissed and fondled and enjoyed the view of each other on a 4th floor jacuzzi bar overlooking a beautiful ocean night. At some point we came up for air and noticed the hot tub had filled with people, grabbed a drink, and waved at our friends and some of the folks we'd met at the Disco who wandered up. This night was about us though: we quickly focused back on each other, and after a while moved to a rooftop bed and made love for hours under the clear night sky. We talked, we laughed, we cuddled, we moaned, we pinched, we sucked, all in our perfect and private little paradise bed.

And that was day one. Our first time ever doing anything like that, and still 7 nights left!

For the rest of the week we were much more in tune with the flow of things. Sleep-in, grab some brunch, head to the pool, join the pool activities or take a class, migrate to the hot tub in the late afternoon, clean-up, head to the lobby bar for a drink and socialize, grab some dinner, get themed-up, back to the lobby bar, disco, maybe sin room (we did find it eventually!), jacuzzi, usually "earn our pizza" on the jacuzzi beds, pizza time, and bed. It sounds a lot of routine, but there's so much variety in every one of those it kept us interested and trying new things the whole week. Meeting new people almost every day, different activities (the classes are a must!), some time in the gym or a massage, and our week just flew by in a flurry of fun.

Our fun highlights from the rest of the week, especially if you go during ISM:

  • The people. I can't say this enough. To the friends we made on this trip: you're awesome, we hope to see you again next year, and now that we're a little less buried from work we hope to be in touch (and if we don't have your contact info message us!). For those reading this: you'll meet amazing people of all ages and walks of life. Don't come with any expectations and you'll leave with great memories and stories from the people you meet
  • The staff. At 10am we were chased half-way down the resort by a bartender and handed our regular drinks. People were friendly, they got to know us, they anticipated what we wanted, and they made us laugh. I couldn't have asked for better.
  • Again, the people. Having been to bigger resorts where everyone keeps to themselves this has been an eye-opening experience for us. With 2000 people at a hotel we barely even spoke to the bartenders. With under 200 we got to know almost everyone there, including the staff and entertainers. The only way we could've met more was learning French or Spanish. We learned more about the Thai massage instructor's (and husband's) healthy eating habits and weird butter they brought than everything we knew combined about guests at a mega resort
  • Take the massage class on days that are followed-by the female/male orgasm classes (it was Tues/Thurs for us). The massage is a sexy warm-up for your partner who after an hour should be pretty eager to see you writhe around. Also being surrounded by a room full of people trying to make their partner cum is really hot
  • The erotic couples massage is worth it, and definitely worth it if this is your first time and you can go listen to a "membership" pitch for a discount
  • Teppanyaki at the Suki restaurant. Book it with some of the friends you'll meet. It's for 6, and a worthwhile dinner and show
  • Order the Mayan Coffee for dessert, it's a show unto itself. To be fair this is done at other resorts too, but it's done well here and worth it
  • The jacuzzi in the afternoon is a great place to have some no-pressure fun. There was a lovely, short-haired lady who added a massage for her during a little play (and gave him a quick "shush" for a bad joke!)
  • To our Alberta friends J and A. J: thanks for being so awesome and a great icebreaker! A: I don't think either of us will ever forget you and the jacuzzi bar. Or your birthday hat.
  • Late night pizza will never cease to be amazing. Order what you want. Don't forget to tip the pizza lady, especially since most nights you'll be passing-by in nothing but sandals and a towel
  • The on-site scuba coordinator is a lot of fun, and the instructor they hired was great. We were certified over two afternoons of diving and an exam, which was a fun excursion that left right from the beach!

Some things we learned on our trip and from talking to regulars

  • Our plan to hit the Coco Bongo one night on the trip quickly evaporated once we discovered the disco. I'm sure Coco Bongo's fun, but why would we pay-more and cab-to the same thing we're getting here?
  • We came with an open mind, but remembered who we came with. This was also the sage advice given to us by the 10+ trips experienced guests. Before we arrived we talked about our expectations. This gave plenty of sexy time together, some new kinds of fun for her, and a ton of lasting, fun memories with no bad ones.
  • There's plenty of room to try new, sexy things no matter your comfort level. There's no expectations, and you can be fun (and flirty!) and never feel pressure to do anything you're uncomfortable with. Being our first time to any place like this we felt nothing but welcome
  • Try new things! The classes and erotic massage pushed our comfort levels. We found a lot of new things we like, and better ways to talk about and try what we haven't before
  • Dress-up for themes! You don't have to wear a lot. Really, one night a guy we met wore only a glow wrist bracelet. Not around his wrist
  • Not charging your grooming shaver may result in only enough power for half your balls
  • Late night pizza at the lobby bar is amazing!
  • But, "Earn your pizza"
  • Sex in public is great. With other people around, without, it's a must-have (and must-repeat!) experience
  • Don't eat the buffet sushi. We didn't get sick, but our friends lost almost two evenings. Having half of a couple get sick at a couples resort didn't look like a lot of fun.

Anything we'd do different?

It's tough to complain about such a great experience. The small-size of the resort was great. It was a little pricey, but if that means keeping occupancy at intimate levels it's ok.

If we'd nitpick there'd be a couple small things. Tile the whole bathroom instead of just the showers, maybe add some bathroom shelf space in the Deluxe rooms for toiletries, possibly a rug on the deathly-slippery-when-wet tile in the main room. That's about it, really we spent so little time in the rooms we didn't care.

Bugs are around, but seem to prefer the women. It was pretty minor, but if you react badly to bites you might want to consider bringing whatever you use at home.

Finally, a little better advertised scheduling might be nice. We're on the fence about this: DRM in a big way is about discovery, and "discovering" little gems like the orgasm classes made them feel very personal and intimate. On the other hand knowing the general schedule of things before we arrived and a daily reminder of the itinerary might've worked better for lazy vacationer mode. YMMV.

Final thoughts

We'll be back next year. A lot of couples we met are multiple-trips-per-year people. That doesn't work for us right now, but when we think Mexico we now definitely have Desire on the brain!

We met fun, exciting people of every age, from every part of the world. We had great food, fun entertainment, and memorable staff. We had uninterrupted days reconnecting, exploring each other, learning new things about each other, and learning new ways to please each other. What we took away was memories and energy that'll last us until our next trip.

See you in Mexico,

Great trip report!. We are heading down for the first time on March 28th for 2 weeks. Do you think you could have done 2 weeks or would it have been too much? :CAN

You'll have a great two weeks. The staff worked hard to get everyone joining-in with activities, and with a small guest list and new faces every day you'll always have new people to meet. Compared to a regular resort there's always lots going-on, and where you'll probably see some of the same activities in week 2 it's bound to be a much different crowd to enjoy.

(there's always Xel-Ha or Xcaret, but compared to inventing a jacuzzi ice-breaker about how the guy next to you once fought a tiger they just don't match-up)

Some of the people we met in January are headed back in early April so you'll probably meet them. Be on the lookout for a cute, freckled red-head and her husband who knows all the bartenders by name (who keep some cans of lite beer on hand just for him!).

Though we might need to start a petition for sin room signage!
