Can you bring your own (liquor, wine, beer) into Desire ?

Postby nwright2181 » Thu Jan 06, 2011 11:38 pm

We have been to Cancun several times, and we have tried Sol and Dos XX, but are not fans of tap beer AT ALL.

Hard liquor seems to cause problems in our relationship at times...but we are huge beer drinkers.

So....if we decide we want to BUY a certain beer, and bring it back to the resort, can we do that? Can we buy a case of beer and ask the bar to keep it on ice and only serve it only to us?

I know this sounds dumb at an ALL ICLUSINVE, but we are trying to figure it all out...

Can't wait to hear your advice...

The quick answer is Yes, no problem bringing in your own booze, wine or beer.

Personally my fav Mexican brew is Negra Modelo, a dark smooth beer.

Since the resort does not stock that brand I will occasionally(usually) pick up some on the trip from the airport and make my stay that much more enjoyable.

Yes there is a OXXO (like a 7/11) located right on the main highway(307) coming from the airport to Desire. The OXXO is located on the tight hand side of the highway in a small plaza just where the driver would normally turn left down the road to Desire. They carry most of the local brands.

If you are looking for a specific US or International brand you may have to go the opposite way from Desire first, by going north up to Cancun and doing a stop at the big WalMart there before heading south to Desire.

If you book private transfers most transfer companies will allow you (for a small extra price) to make an extra stop.

We always use USA Transfers since they are very reliable, one of the least expensive and also do not mind extra stops

Here is the link to their info on transfers to Desire: <img src="http://img684.imageshack.us/img684/1160/logogifvsmall.gif" border="0">

Legal?

Postby pelagiccouple » Thu Jun 02, 2011 9:24 pm

Is it legal to bring wine and liquor on the plane into Mexico? I don’t want to get in trouble at customs in the airport. Thanks in advanced for any answers.

Tourists are allowed to bring into Mexico, on each visit, a maximum of up to 3 liters per person of alcoholic beverages (any combination of Liquor, wine or beer). Because of TSA regulations these beverages can't be part of your carry on and therefore must be in your checked luggage.

When you get to the Cancun airport, you can hit the duty free shops before you go out to your ride. Bear in mind that some "Mexican" alcohol brands we get in the US they don't sell there, like Patron tequila. Unless you require a specific brand of wine, I'd just get it at the duty free.

Unfortunately that won't work for bring booze into Mexico.

In Mexico or any international airport, to purchase duty free you have to have a boarding pass to show you are leaving the country on that day - the duty free purchases are then delivered to you just before you board your outbound flight.

There is duty free upon arrival at one of the terminals at Cancun International, can never remember which one, believe it might be Terminal 3. Never paid any attention as to whether you can purchase alcohol there, we usually just stop in for cigarettes (hoping that 'desire' changes with our next trip!)

FYI - All of Quintana Roo is designated a duty free state, so prices of liquor are not really going to be too much different if you buy it in a duty free shop or elsewhere locally, in fact prices on booze is far better at the local Cancun WalMart, La Europa, etc than at the airport anyway - lol

It is possible at the Mexico City Airport http://www.dutyfreeonarrival.com/en/travelpoint/MEX but it appears to be a future/pending situation at the Cancun airport -Terminal 3 only- read the last line of the page http://www.dutyfreeonarrival.com/en/search/Cancun

CokeMann,

I can confirm the duty free store is operating in the Terminal 3 baggage area (it was also open last July). I bought a bottle of Havana Club last Friday for my wife as we we waiting to go thru customs.

"The missus loves 43 and we always buy several bottles at the terminal when we arrive to take to Desire with us."

Diane also loves 43 (unavailable in Ontario), (aphrodisiacal qualities imho) and we try to beg, borrow, barter or use a butler to get as much 43 as we can each trip. It seems to evaporate once open. Also good for sharing etc..... Requested some bar inventory with my express check in a couple of days ago.

We arrive next Friday, does anyone know if flights out of Toronto arrive at Terminal 3? So many trips, not sure what terminal we use. Seems an easy way to stock up on arrival.

Originally when terminal 3 opened it was to handle all international arrivals and terminal 2 was to be only for domestic flights. But as it evolved there are still a few airlines using terminal 2 for international arrivals.
All of the major US airlines come in to terminal 3, but Air Canada, Jet blue, West Jet, Airtran, Canjet, and several other small type airlines do go into terminal 2.
You can find the info on the airport website:

Thanks Mike,

We're on Westjet so I guess its back to beg, borrow, barter or butler to get our 43.
