In Mexico or any international airport, to purchase duty free you have to have a boarding pass to show you are leaving the country on that day - the duty free purchases are then delivered to you just before you board your outbound flight.

Never paid any attention as to whether you can purchase alcohol there, we usually just stop in for cigarettes (hoping that 'desire' changes with our next trip!)
FYI - All of Quintana Roo is designated a duty free state, so prices of liquor are not really going to be too much different if you buy it in a duty free shop or elsewhere locally, in fact prices on booze is far better at the local Cancun WalMart, La Europa, etc than at the airport anyway - lol
It is possible at the Mexico City Airport
