Currently at Pearl and the beach is the best I've ever seen it. It's not great but it's definitely improving!!

We were there seven days and returned on August 1st. AT THAT TIME it was disgusting, depressing, and sad. It looked and smelled like a sewage lagoon. They clear their beach well... Meaning the sand is clear by early morning. The water however was dark brown and the stench was awful and it could be smelled within the resort quite heavily... Especially in the morning. You didn't want to look at it, touch it, or photograph it.

I say this because nobody is being fully honest about the issue... And I understand why. We all love Pearl and especially it's staff. We don't want to hurt the resort or the people we love... BUT... People deserve to know what the situation has been. We were literally smacked in the face by the sight and smell of it all. We wish we would have been prepared at least. We still would have gone and had a great time, but it would have saved some frustration knowing in advance and not being surprised.

Now... It's very possible the barrier has significantly improved the water quality within it's confinement area over the last twelve days... That and the possibility that the seaweed field has dimensioned would be great. I REALLY hope so.

The question I would want to know is whether or not the resort is attacking/skimming/cleaning the water on the edges of the barrier. When we were there the barrier would push tons of it around the side and it would deposit and collect on the beach and in the water right next to the resort. That seaweed is where the stench came from as it just sat there and rotted.

I know that's not their property, but they need to figure out how to remove that as well to improve the views and the smells.

Again, I truly hope they're figuring it out. They have to because they wouldn't be able to survive like it was when we were there.

I just wanted to write a true telling if what it was like so those that are planning a trip can ask the right questions and at least be prepared for the possibility. Hopefully you get the crystal clear water and lovely beach smells we've all grown to love.

Good to know. We're heading there tomorrow (actually today since it's past midnight). Now we know what to expect. Thanks for the honest review and also for the post on the construction as well.

Also keen in information.

Got an email a couple of weeks ago to say it was installed. No one expects miracles, but would be good to know if the beach is now habitable?

Anyone able to post a pic? Live cam at puerto morelos looks much better than last year. Like others said we should not expect miracles but sure would be nice to get to use/enjoy the beach a bit this time.

We were at Pearl 8/10 - 8/17. The seaweed barrier is in place and working. The beach has very little seaweed on it. However, there are heaps of it on each end of the property where the barrier ends to ensure you get a good whiff of the smell of rotting seaweed. The other issue which the barrier won't help with is that the water is brown and gross.

But keep in mind, Desire is not really a beach vacation! We are normally beach goers but were more than happy to spend ALL our time at the pool. We walked the beach twice. Being newbies its hard to understand until your'e at Desire, but the beach is the least excitng place to be at Desire.

We went to RM to pick up some other scuba divers and the beach at RM was in much better shape, however at 11:30 in the morning it was also empty, but the pool was crowded.

So don't worry about the beach, go and enjoy the pool area, and remember your sunblock!

When we were at RM in June, they had their barrier installed and the conditions were night and day better than they were on our previous visit in January.

But...

Does that mean the beach and water are as nice as, say, Tulum? No. Never have been and probably never will be.

We would love to hear from anyone who has visited since the barrier was installed. How was the beach? Was the awful smell gone? We are "beach people" so are considering re-scheduling our trip until this is all cleared up. Scheduled for the first week of October. Thanks in advance for any information!
