Requests/things for staff

Postby Workhardplayhard » Sat Aug 01, 2020 12:29 pm

We are traveling to Pearl soon, and we were wondering if anyone has heard of any thing that the staff has asked for from the US? We always tip, but given covid, we are wondering if there are things people in Mexico can't get right now.

We messaged Victor and Charlie through FB, and they didn't have any requests.

They really didn't ask for anything - they are just happy to see people. Playmakers right now are Charlie, Kia, Candice and Yuni (a great addition). As always they ask to mention their names on Tripadvisor reviews. I think they get bonuses when that happens?

Going off subject a bit but I saw it in another post with no answer so I will ask it again. With current conditions how do one tip the staff. Do you use cash or is there another form of tipping that they that can be used. Planning a trip to Pearl in Dec and would like to know so that we can change currency at home for a better rate if they still want bills. Know that things can change a lot in 4 months.

It doesn't look like you can donate online through that site though - is not even secure - but there is an address and account number. You might just wanna email them to see if there is a simpler and safer way.

Thanks for your answers about tipping. Here in Hawaii many stores will not take cash just credit cards. We were sure that the staff would be happy with cash but wanted to be sure. By going to our bank and changing dollars to pesos we get a better rate than a currency exchange at the airport plus we are on our way to our happy place sooner.
We would rather tip to each staff member each day then make a one time tip when checking out. If we could afford it we would take several thousand dollars so that everyone that works at Desire ( wait staff, bartenders, ground keepers, maids, cooks, ect.) would receive a small tip not just the ones we see everyday. We believe that each and every employee at a Desire does a outstanding job of making Desire a resort that we all love.

We tip in dollars and just bring a lot of small bills. We tip at all the meals, bartenders, dj’s, pool staff, playmakers. Bring lots of smaller bill denominations- it can be hard to get change at front desk. Dollar tipping based on what we have seen is a lot more common than tipping in pesos.

We will bring cash (USD) for tips as we always do. Given all that’s going on, we will tip regularly and generously. Truthfully, the best thing we can all do is continue to go to Desire so the employees continue to be employed. We were there in March as they were shutting down and the biggest concern we heard from the staff was how long the shutdown would last and the challenge of trying to afford the basics (including water) if they are out of a job for long. By going to pearl and rm we can help make sure our favorite staff members bring home a salary and can support their families.

THere is a lot of vagueness going on in this thread and I am really dying to know. If you are tipping...how much are you...let’s say suggesting for like the bartender a waiter, per service since this is all inclusive. We aren’t getting a bill for dinner so how do you know what to tip? Are you just going along at $5 a clip $10 per?

And yeah it would be nice to take a couple grand, but college tuition bills are precluding that for us just now so...forgive us if you aren’t like the rest of you Bentley Drivers...LOL

(The immediate above was sarcasm for those of you who couldn’t detect it. We sure not all of you drive a Bentley. The rest probably drive a McClaren.)

My humble opinion is to tip as much as you can afford for the service you received. You will then always be comfortable with what you tipped. It doesn’t need to equal what others do. Again, just my opinion.

We usually tip 10 bucks at dinner, 5 at other meals, tip 5 at the bar the first time but not after (usually no pockets)... never gotten anything but great service, regardless whether we tipped a particular transaction. Tipping seems to vary vastly, but service to all guests seems consistently high. On our first 5 day trip I think we brought 200 in cash, which felt not quite enough for the fantastic service we were getting, ended up paying some ridiculous ($15?) ATM fee to pull out some more cash while there.

(Full disclosure: Toyota minivan driver here, and not at all good at the tipping thing- but it felt less awkward at Desire than at home)

Thank you for the general guidance. That makes sense and we’ll adjust things accordingly. Does anyone leave a tip for room service and housekeeping? We thought it best to do so at the end. Or is daily a more friendly gesture.

We were at Pearl for the 4th. We tip $1 per drink all day, including our water bottle fill (we drink a lot of water) $5- $10 at meals and $5 on the bed each day for morning cleaning and to the towel person at the pool. We always bring the small bills with us, we don’t ever exchange there.

For sure, housekeeping staff work hard too and they totally deserve it. Probably better to tip them at the beginning, the first day/night you arrive there. They will definitely appreciate it and might prepare some nice surprises for you in the room - like for instance if you have a special anniversary make sure you inform the front desk and they will take good care of you.

We tip each day; upon check in the front desk person, bell man. Then trough out the day, $10 each morning for housekeeping , $20 when we get our first drink at the pool, $5 to pool man. For meals $5 for lunch then $15/20 for dinner. The only staff that we tip at the end of the trip is the playmakers most trips $50.
This OUR WAY and know that isn't for everyone. Both of us have worked as food workers as well as customer service and know how much a little kindness means to those people. Our earlier statement about a few thousand to tip the entire staff was just a dream of showing our appreciation to all the hard working staff that keep Desire the resort that all of us love; such as the kitchen workers, cooks, ground keepers and such. People that usually don't get tip. As to our cars wife's car is a 1998 BMW and since husband was forced in early retirement he has no car, but before that his car was a 2002 Beetle and we only make one trip a year to Desire so we do tend to go a little overboard.
