Mexican "flu"

Postby g and j » Tue Feb 12, 2013 11:00 am

Went to HBR a few years back and everyone in our group lost a day having a stomach bug (not alcohol related). Some much worse than others. Lets just say I did not put on any weight on vacation. Been to Jamaica numerous times without incident. What are the experiences at Pearl? Any advice on how to avoid? Does a prior trip help you to being immune?

Thanks,

G&J

I've been sick the last two times to Mexico in the last 6 months (pretty badly sick), but never before, after probably 15-20 visits. Never gotten sick from eating at upper-end resorts.

Lately we've been more adventurous about beach dives and such, and have paid. In October of last year, we stayed at a very (very) cheap place where I'm convinced I got sick from their ice cubes, which after reflection were obviously made on-site from non-purified water. I'm not anticipating the same problem at Desire, and haven't seen any complaints in that department (I did see other complaints about the place where I got sick--people getting sick about the same time I was there).

To be fair, I've gotten food poisoning at home restaurants, as well as at other places in the US and India, and even from eating airplane food on a US airline.

I'm planning on at least 4 doses of Pepto per day this time, prophylactically. Can't hurt. The doctor says it may help. Also taking Cipro along, although it didn't help last time. Also, you can buy it anywhere in Mexico.

Twelve plus trips.... not once have I or my wife gotten any kind of GI bug. It's a non-issue, as far as we are concerned.
