Even though the resort is all inclusive, does anyone recommend tipping staff?

We always do! It really does not change the level of service you recieve. We feel the staff goes "above and beyond" and are very worthy of a little extra.

A lot of people have their own ideas about tipping, especially at places like Desire. We always tip believing that the staff deserve it for all that they do for us.

But I have read an article written by a travel expert the recommends tipping. He even recommends tipping the front desk employees before check in and said that
many times you will get a better room than if you didn't tip. Maybe not an upgrade but a room that may be in a better location or with newer remodeling.
Never thought about tipping the front desk but will do it on our next trip and see what happens.

Tipping the front desk before getting served? That's called a bribe.

How would you go about tipping the front desk check-in people, right off the bat? Palm a $20 to them in a handshake?

That tipping tactic may work at larger resorts where there are many hundreds of rooms to choose from - it doesn't really work at Desire Pearl where there are only about 80 rooms(once your take the Penthouses out of the mix) - IMHO don't .....

Thanks for that. I think we'll just see what's available, and perhaps if the resort isn't full, they'll offer us something. Doesn't hurt to ask.

We always tip when we have been there, and we don't mind if other see us do it. I know some people try to be sly but we never worry about it. Between tipping, being friendly, and having good conversations with the staff, we had absolutely excellent service. Pablo was one of the bartenders that we saw both times previously, and not only did he remember us the second time, he remembered our preferred drinks and when he saw either of us approaching would often just start making them with a quick point-thumbs up.
