Posted: Thu Sep 17, 2015 1:53 pmThe seaweed is thick and does give off stinky fumes occassionally, especially right after a front loader and large crew of men with pitchforks hauled it off on Tuesday (9/15). The process took the better part of the day and did remove a lot of debris and gave back about 5 feet of level beach but it was obvious the build up would stack up right away in that margin.... by yesterday morning (Wednesday) it was piling up again. According to Javier the city of Pto Morelos authorizes only one type of machine to work on the beach (the front loader) and they do this about once a week. Two Pearl beach rakers worked long hours all other days to make a small dent in the piles.
It did not hamper our enjoyment of lounging on the beach most days but only saw a few brave souls take a swim in it.

Posted: Sat Sep 19, 2015 4:12 pmThe water has been calm for 2 days and the workers have found a beach under the piles of seaweed they have removed. Smell has abated.

Posted: Mon Sep 21, 2015 9:37 amWe just returned from Pearl this past Saturday. Going through withdrawal now! Anyway, the seaweed situation seemed markedly improved on Friday and Saturday it looked even better. HOWEVER, when our plane took off we could see TONS more seaweed floating towards the shore. We had read almost every thread we could find about Pearl since this was our first time (we got to spend two amazing weeks there), so we were concerned about the smell.
When you first arrive, you will notice the smell. We got accustomed to it and even spent about three days down on the beach. We packed some Vicks VapoRub to put a small dab under our nostrils if the smell was overwhelming. If you do this, please note that it will affect the taste of whatever you're drinking....so I suggest sticking with things that are not super sweet. Mojitos are a good choice. If you want something more sweet, perhaps ask Daylan (one of the bartenders at the pool/beach bar....he has a killer smile and learned to speak English by listening to Metallica...he's an awesome kid...but I digress) to make a strawberry/lime/mint daquiri. I intend to put this tip in my trip report, but thought it might be helpful for those who will be going before I get it posted.

Posted: Mon Sep 21, 2015 7:07 pmWe left yesterday and the seaweed was waaaaaay better. Almost back to its normal little amounts they rake up daily. A month ago when we went for the weekend, it was almost unbearable from the odor standpoint. You go out of your room for breakfast and it was like a punch in the mouth. Now....all good.
