If I might add another opinion...
We've always stayed in Penthouses, but on our last trip we decided to save a few bucks and split our stay between a penthouse and then try a plunge pool room. We were there last May right when a tropical storm hit the resort. It kept us from using our Penthouse deck and pool even one single time.
Then we moved to the plunge pool room. The room itself was fantastic... The two full bathrooms was a huge deal. And here's one that most people don't think about... The penthouses have vaulted ceilings, so you can't "rent" a sex swing (because there's no hooks). So we were excited to be able to rent one in the plunge pool room for a couple days as we'd always wanted to give that a try.
In the 4 days we were in the plunge pool room, we got in the pool on our own only one time, for like 10 minutes.
But the last full night there, there were TORRENTIAL downpours, and those plunge pool rooms are COVERED (where the pent pools aren't, obv). So we got a hold of all of our friends and told them all to come over, ordered a ton of food and bottles of alcohol, and basically had a HUGE party (where otherwise the resort was basically shut down from the storm).
So... In that case, that night of the party made the money for the plunge pool room well spent.
But outside of that sort of circumstance, we've decided it's tough to justify, and this next trip will be our first in a master suite only. I'll be very interested to see if we miss our rooftop deck or plunge pool... But I'm guessing we won't. If anything it will force us to be out in the public areas a bit more, making more friends and hanging with old ones.
