First trip to Desire Pearl May 11-19, 2019

Postby Stephncal » Sat Jun 01, 2019 8:53 pm

We visited Pearl from May 11-19, 2019. This was our first trip to Desire (or anything similar). We are a non-LS couple.

Most importantly, we had an amazing time. We’ve been to lots of great hotels/resorts (Sandals, Ritz, JW, etc.) but none were like this. It was the single best vacation we’ve had and we are definitely going back. In fact, we’ve already booked for September and are planning a third trip in May 2020.

The sexy/naked element is fun, but the people are what truly makes the experience. Usually, people barely talk to you on vacation. Not here. We spent hours every day chatting with interesting couples from all over. We had such a good time with one couple that we’re coordinating future trips together. The thought that we could make friends like that on vacation was inconceivable prior to us visiting Desire.

We are 37 and 40 years old. Almost everyone else was in their 50’s or 60’s. This didn’t matter to us, but we did wish there were a few more couples our age. Maybe there are more couples in their 30’s and 40’s at RM? We visited RM briefly for an hour, later in the week, but it was early in the day and few people were out and about. Maybe the ages at Pearl vary from week to week.

The resort is a short 25 minute drive from the Cancun airport. We scheduled a van in advance with USA Transfers and they were very good. We got there early and our hotel room wasn’t ready until about 3pm. When we entered the lobby, I was a bit nervous and not sure what to expect. The concierge reviewed all the resort info, confirmed that we knew what we had signed up for, and invited us to the spa to drop off our stuff. They sent us both into the ladies dressing room, which initially seemed uncomfortable, but was not an issue. We then headed to Aphrodite for lunch and then the pool.

Almost everyone was completely naked. I took the plunge right away by taking off my shorts and hopping into the pool. It was initially weird but quickly became the new normal. My wife took off her top, but wore her bottoms for several days. By day 3 or 4, she decided that wet bathing suit bottoms were a hassle she didn’t need and joined the crowd. By the day after, she wasn’t bothering with any clothes even to walk to the pool or hot tub.

Our first-timer yellow bands did spark some dialog and helped us to find other newbies. We will miss them when we have to wear white bands next time.

The food was consistently good, but not amazing. Better than an Outback Steakhouse or Carrabbas but not fine dining (think upscale cruise ship). The beer and wine choices were somewhat limited, but we both found something we liked. My wife really enjoyed the octopus carpaccio and the salmon tartar. I am a vegetarian and loved the soups (fantastic) and the vegetarian fajitas/tacos. The only consistent disappointment was dessert. We’re not big dessert people, but we never found one we loved. With some time, we learned to get better at asking for what we liked, even if it wasn’t on the menu. The staff was always very accommodating. In the evenings, we mostly ate at Pearl (the fancier restaurant) but struggled with reservations. There was often only very early or late seating times available. Not sure why there weren’t more reservations available during prime time because the restaurant was always half empty. Towards the end of our trip, we gave up worrying about being in the fancier restaurant and preferred the flexibility of anytime dining at Aphrodite. We ate at Suki only once, but it was our least favorite. Suki was in a temporary location as the new spot (on top of Aphrodite) was still under construction. Supposedly, the new restaurant will have hibachi tables so I’m sure we’ll give it a second try on our next visit.

We stayed in a Junior Suite and we were very happy with it. It was large and spotlessly clean. The decor is a bit dated, but completely fine. Our room was in the starfish building at the far end of the resort near the dock. The balcony was huge and we hung out their quite a bit when we wanted quiet time. The view was great. Our only complaint about the room was the water temperature in the shower. It was overly sensitive to the tiniest movement and frequently became scaldingly hot. It may have been related to all the construction going on, but it was frustrating. The construction did not have any other impact on our stay. We found the beds to be very comfortable (frequently an issue even in very upscale resorts). Our friends stayed in an ocean view and they also liked their room. There were some rooms with small private pools, but these seemed like a novelty and we only saw someone use one once in eight days.

As we expected, there was a ridiculous amount of seaweed. A small army tried to haul it away every morning, but it was a losing battle. It prevented us (and most guests) from going in the ocean, but no one seemed to mind. We were worried that the seaweed might smell, but fortunately it did not. They recently installed a floating barrier at RM that seemed to eliminate nearly all of the seaweed on the beach. Hopefully they can do something similar at Pearl.

We went to the shows most nights, as did nearly all of the guests. They begin at 10:30pm and run for about 30 minutes. We wish they started a little earlier. 10:00pm or even 9:30pm would have been excellent. This seemed to be a common comment among the guests. Afterwards, everyone dances in the disco or goes to the hot tub (our preference). Nights were a ton of fun, but often went later than we would have wanted. We’re used to getting up early for work, kids going to school, etc. and we’re just not used to partying till the wee hours of the morning. Some of the shows were amazing (especially the one featuring Kia) but some were not. They definitely use that time to drive up the energy level. There is a very small playroom connected to the disco. We did not see anyone use it while we were there, though admittedly, we headed to the hot tub almost immediately after the show finished each night. The staff told us they are building a new playroom elsewhere on the resort as part of their expansion. We don’t know the ETA for this. We dressed up for dinner every night, but didn’t bring much in the way of theme attire. It didn’t matter. Everyone wore whatever they wanted and nobody cared. Almost every woman at the resort wore a corset on Wednesday night, but participation varied a lot throughout the week. Far more women than men participated in the theme nights.

The hot tub is the most social place at Pearl. Large crowds gathered there every afternoon at 4pm and again after the shows at 11pm. We found the water temperature to be very hot in the afternoon but near perfect at night time. In the evenings, there was some action on the beds, but it felt more like a sexy ambience in the background rather than a roman orgy. Several couples asked us if we were in the LS, but there was never the least bit of pressure from anyone. Everyone was happy to laugh and chat, regardless of what you were into. Tip: Get your towels when you arrive at the hot tub and put them with your stuff. Sometimes they run out (especially very late at night) and you don’t want to be hunting for towels when you’re ready for bed.

We did step out of our comfort zone and signed up for an erotic massage at the spa. It was a new and unique experience for us, but we’re not sure if we would do it a second time. My wife felt her therapist was far too rough and she did not love it. Other guests we spoke with described a similar experience, though some of the women did seem to enjoy it more than she did. We realized that we did not do a good job communicating with the therapist and would recommend that if you do schedule an erotic massage, you should definitely tell them what you like and what you don’t.

We attended both workshops with Richard and Lauren. If you go to Desire, you must try these. They are held in the disco and every session was completely full. Richard is hilarious and Lauren is one of the sexiest women you will ever meet. We really enjoyed both sessions, but my wife actually liked the men’s session (lingam - worshipping the man) best. It definitely turned into an orgy afterwards, but not everyone stayed for that. Richard and Lauren only work for tips so if you do attend, you should take good care of them. It was one of the highlights of our vacation. They also introduced us to their podcast (room77) and it’s awesome.

We did attend the membership sales presentation with Sam. We weren’t going to do this, but we wanted to visit RM for a quick tour (we visited for less than an hour) and they provided us day passes for meeting with him (plus some other perks). He was smart and funny and we liked chatting with him as much as everyone else we met that week. We told him up front that we would come back to Desire but weren’t sure we had the time and child care coverage to visit often enough to make a membership work for us. There was no pressure to buy anything. We have not bought a membership but will keep thinking about it. We don’t have any advice for others on whether you should buy in or not, but their presentation is not something to be scared of.

Overall, it was the best vacation we’ve ever taken. It’s not the fanciest resort, but it’s an incredible and unique place. The staff is excellent and they bend over backwards to accommodate every request you have. The atmosphere is sexy and fun in a way that we’ve never experienced before. Most importantly, the other guests are amazing. We met loads of people (at this tiny resort) who we could chat with for hours. They were all kind, funny, and accepting. During naked water polo (which is a lot of fun), I lost my wedding ring. All the guests and staff members (dozens of people) stopped what they were doing to help me search the massive pool (we found it). I can’t imagine that happening anywhere else.

This resort won’t be for everyone. But if you are looking for something fun, sexy, and different, it might be your best vacation ever. We can’t wait to go back.

Very nice review. Thank you!

We are going in 8 weeks, and in your situation too (non LS so far and first time C/O resort. Your details help me to feel comfortable not going overboard on theme nights (but she is getting super sexy dresses for the disco).

Glad to hear you loved it so much.
