This is a very old topic but a practical question ... there are 1-800 numbers to call Desire from USA . The problem is that folks back home wud come to know we are in Desire if they call that number ...shhhhh.....!!!

Any other number veterans know to provide back home to parents and grand parents who are baby sitting the kids to call in case of a need without divulging that we are in desire ..lol :)

You can contact the resort for the family friendly number to call. They ask that you not share the number on the public forums.

If you have T-Mobile in the U.S., text messaging is free and $0.20/minute talk time. Also, Google Hangouts / FaceTime calls work well over the Wifi. It is nice not to worry how a family member would get a hold of us in an emergency.

Also if you have AT&T you can use your phone with no extra charge (I think jajaj). The thing is AT&T just bought two of the mobile carriers here in Mexico and made them AT&T so at least for people who now have AT&T Mexico they can use their same minutes internationally between Mexico and the USA. I'm not 100% sure if it's both ways for USA customers and Mexico.

Tmobile wi-fi calling is free and also works at both resorts. Really nice feature to make and receive calls from back home without the sticker shock of a large bill when you return.

Sprint now has free cell service in Mexico and Canada, texting too. Just call Sprint and add it to your plan for no charge. We have used it in Puerto Vallarta and it worked great, hoping it works good at Pearl too :)

What about facetime with an iphone or fb messaging. Will that work instead of having to pay international rates?

Yep, also just make sure that you are using WiFi to connect rather than your data plan and it's all free ;)

Just called my carrier, Sprint. They now have unlimited talk and text and 1 gig data in Mexico included in all plans. Had to change a couple of settings and download an update. Nice!

AT&T added this last month also. Verify your plan though! includes data also.

We have Verizon and they also have I think 3 different plans to choose from for Mexico. The one we got was for $2.00 a day and it doesn't start until your first call. If you don't have to use it then you aren't charged. :D

The $2.00 a day unlimited with Verizon is called TRAVEL PASS we use it every trip and it works great just like being in the states.
