Sorry if we missed that in previous posts, but we wanted to know if US Dollars are preferred to Pesos concerning tips given to the staff ?
In one discussion about tips (that we can't find again on the forum), people talk about US Dollars only.
Are pesos accepted ?
We're coming from Europe and we planned to withdraw some local money at our arrival at the airport.
If needed, we'll take US dollars here before departure.
Thanks in advance for your reply and sorry to bother !

For tipping, money is money, dollars or pesos all is welcome. But, you are going to get screwed with the exchange rate if you exchange at the airport. You're coming from Europe? UK? We aren't going to Mexico until September, but have just ordered our tip money in $$s because the exchange rate is great for us right now, the best for a year.

My thought on currency is that pesos are probably more convenient for the staff. US dollars seem to be appreciated as well. I generally stop at an ATM at the airport and get pesos. There has been a Santander ATM right outside customs. Good exchange rate and fees aren't bad. Then I get change in the lobby as I need smaller bills.

:L ....same here, plus I bring some $2 US bills as they make for good conversation and the staff enjoy them.

+1 on the $2 bills.....I brought $200 worth of $2 bills, and on more than one occasion after tipping one of the staff, someone else would come up and ask if they could buy a few of the $2 bills from me. I didn't tip every time we went to eat, or every time I got a drink, but I took very good care of the staff and they took very good care of us!

We really only spend about 300 bucks everytime we go including gifts for kids at airport. Majority is tips while there. Take 50-100 in singles and small bills. 20s to pool guys and bar staff

And as posted elsewhere, the Mexican pesos are plastic money so they are handy around the hot tub and pool bars.
