Desire Los Cabos – October 2012

I signed into the new forum and noticed the trip reports for Los Cabos are currently missing, so thought I would contribute our thoughts. We have spent one week in RM, 4 days in Cabo, and another 2 days in Cabo in October. We will make lots of comparisons between RM and Cabo for those who are interested.

Obviously we had a good time in May since we returned in October. We would have liked 3-4 days tacked onto a week in Cabo San Lucas, but alas Desire Cabo was sold out for the first time, due to a takeover. The resort was in even better shape than May, and that despite massive floods 6 days prior to our arrival.

Word of warning for those taking a shuttle from the airport, Desire is usually the first stop, and the sign out front and statue leave little (or lots) to the imagination. Expect some reaction from the shuttle mates. As one rider heard a woman ask her husband, did that say exotic or erotic, to which he replied both as he exited.

Unlike our May trip all the refurbishments had been completed and further enhancements were being undertaken. The disco was no redone and the décor was definitely nicer. Playroom still sucked, looks more like a bus with a two rows of vinyl beds. The Mrs. Walked in and simply said “are you kidding me”. Managed to dance some, though the music was not much to our liking. We are both 55 but do dance to just about any generation, somehow the playlist didn’t do much for us (By comparison thoroughly enjoyed RM). Essentially, the RM disco wins hands down.
Our first day at the pool, beds were missing that were being repainted etc. There were almost not enough available even with the low occupancy. However, they found us umbrellas to stay out of the super hot heat and humidity (due to the floods the desert was GREEN and the humidity was sky high), and by the next morning all was completed. From our experience, and the opinions of others there was always enough beds due to low occupancy, with the takeover group arriving many more beds were being added to the pool area. Kudos to management for preparing.
Despite low occupancy the best part of Cabo both times was the people. They are easy to meet, talk with etc. During our two days, pool volleyball had nearly everyone participating, probably 75%. On our last night many takeover people were arriving, definitely flashier, less clothing optional, and cliques. Friends of ours were there during the takeover and reported how much friendlier their last 2 days were after the takeover, paralleling our experience.

Don’t know what it is at Cabo, virtually all women are topless or bottomless. But a significant number of guys wear shorts. Maybe the lifestyle/naturist mix is different than what we found at RM.

One of the best features of Cabo is the pool. Larger than RM, swim up bar (in the shade in the afternoon), and just facilitates easy conversations. Most late afternoons half the crowd is in the pool and around the bar, until everyone migrates up to the Jacuzzi to continue.
The Jacuzzi is also much superior to RM, larger, and view of the ocean, plus the sound of the surf when you are on the beds. Huge deck and lots of beds. Late night can vary, but even the quiet nights are great, with the stars and the surf. For those not into the lifestyle but looking for some open air pleasure, we often found couples enjoying themselves alone at midnight.

In May we found the entertainment rather sucked. This was obviously improved in October. In particular Cesar and Black Magic were great. Poolside was not non-stop but seemed perfect for the crowd.

The beach in Cabo is awesome BUT, can’t swim in the ocean and no beachfront clothing optional. This is probably the biggest drawback for Cabo versus RM. Nothing like the beach beds and Africa serving drinks.

The rooms are a definite step up from RM, excluding the toilet smells. Someone screwed up the plumbing design. Air conditioning works very well.
Food was good to adequate, we continue to enjoy Suki’s. Only our last night (takeover starting to arrive) were all 3 restaurants open. So still hard to compare it to RM.

We will be back to both resorts, Feb. already booked for RM.

Thanks for your trip report comparing both LC and RM. Since we live in Hawaii we have only been to LC as it is closer and a lot less time to get to. But we love it.
It is good to hear that LC is getting back to its pre Tempatation days and that they staff is working hard to make the guest happy. We are planning another trip to LC in April or early May and are really looking forward to it. Sometime soon we will have to try RM if we can stand the bugs as they just seem to love bitting us.

werfun,

One half of us attracts bugs like crazy. Stick to April or May. In our May trip not a single bite. In early October many. We did of course arrive right after major flooding. btw August/Sept is the rainy season. Had a timeshare week in Los Cabos, 15 year regulars had never been biten before that week, so we are sure the bugs were an anomaly.
