Tips

Postby janeandjohn69 » Fri Nov 11, 2011 7:02 am

Ok, it has been almost 10 years since we last went to Mexico. What is the going rate for tips now a day? Used to be 1$ US back in the day. Has inflation worked its magic on that too? Just want to make certain I bring the right kind of bills...

In our opinion, there is no "going rate" ... Tipping at Desire ranges from no tips at all, to out-&-out bribery. Everyone has their own opinion of the "going rate".

Our personal choice is to leave an envelope with $60 US in it at the front desk, with a manager-level person, for inclusion in the "staff-tips-pool" which, as we understand it, is divided using some "fair" formula between all the staff at the resort.

We tipped 250 pesos for both our regular waiter and for Sylvia at the pool for the week. Another 100 for the cleaning staff and 200 each for Gustavo and Luis. We also tipped our night time bartender for his special drinks and for any other over and above service.

Good to know they have a Tip-pool system. Makes things easier.

Headstone,
Why tip your waiter who brought you the food and not the people in the kitchen who prepared it?
Giving to the pool is fairer.
