Snorkelling?

Has anyone snorkeled out at the end of the pier? if so, is there anything to see? Oh, and are there loungers and/or chairs at the end of the pier? Just curious.

We were snorkeling last August (needed some vanilla photos) around the pier, the water is murky and you have to be careful of the wave action around the pilings. Very large school of fish in the thousands around the pier, keep forgetting to look them up, barracuda, jacks, trumpet fish were the others we saw. There are wooden benches from what I can recall, you do get people walking the beach going out on the pier, almost forgot there are a lot of fish hooks and fishing line tangled around the deck and pilings and the pier going out gets extremely hot on the feet. We will probably go out again on our March trip as it is nice and close, if you want to go out to the reef I am sure the front desk can arrange it with one of the tours.

As of late August of last year(2012) a large gate on the entrance to the pier was installed and only guests of Pearl are allowed to use the Pier.

Back in December we used to lay on the towels at the end of the pier. Very calm and romantic! The water over there was always clean. There were few fish and we saw crabs and sea stars. And swimming from the pier was the best! There are couple of wooden steps down and then you have to jump into the water or use your biceps :) to slowly move down to the water (if you do not want to wet your hair). However, I could not manage to do the same going back up to the stairs and I had to swim to the beach - nothing wrong with this (I enjoyed it). My other half could get up to the steps (the swimming in calm water is boring for him :)).

Does anyone know if you can check-out or rent mask/snorkel/fins at the resort? I hate to bring a lot of stuff that I may use only once for an hour or so.
