Just arrived and it's pretty bad. We came in April and it is worse now than it was in April.

It's hard to say, but Cancun and Riviera Maya beaches are in the worst conditions I've ever seen in 44 years. Sargassum invassion is the highest in the last 3 years, when problems started. Be prepared for having all your activities at pool and jacuzzi.
I've been at Riviera Maya from June 13 to 20 (business trip) and last day I went to my favorite beach: Xpu-ha. Worst than in May 12, when I visited it on previous time.

Judging from the Akumal webcam, it looks scary bad. Good thing that there's plenty of room at the pool for everyone.

Unfortunately this seems to be becoming the norm. National news this morning showing Florida beaches with worst problem ever. Problem is apparently throughout the Caribbean :(

I love the beach and the ocean, but between June 28th and July 2nd, we never got in b/c the grass was thick.

Hope it clears out for everyone else. If not, the pool area was more than adequate!

Anyone have a clue as to whether or not this is seasonal??? Or is this just general global warming :?:

It's more than a seasonal thing and Climate Change is the leading suspect.

You can certainly get more details on the web but in general, there is/has always been a giant sargasso "sea" out in the Atlantic. It normally stays there due to "normal" currents and weather. Something has changed and parts/more of it are breaking off and heading into the Caribbean, washing up on beaches.

That's my understanding anyway...

Another bit of information some may find interesting is Desire (RM, not sure about Pearl) is not permitted to use tractors or quads to clean the beach. We’ve seen them on other beaches in Cancun and inquired as to why they don’t use them at RM. With tractors you could keep the beach clean of Saragossa all day long if you wanted. Renee explained the government will not allow them on RM’s beach as Sea Turtles use the beach to nest. So raking by hand and garbage bags is their only option.

We wondered why they were doing everything by hand. We were up early every day, and would walk the beach. They also had an area blocked off where a nest was buried. We hoped they would hatch while we were there, but no such luck.

But the hand raking looked like a very tedious and un-ending job.
