XM reception at Desires??

just wondering if there is XM reception at Desires.?

XM and Sirius are satellite based so the answer is yes. You'll need to know where to point your antenna.

I know this isn't about Cancun, but a few years back I took my XM receiver on a cruise, thinking that the service is satellite based, but I could not get any reception. I would send an email to XM to confirm.

XM is basically just a US thing (some coverage in Canada). Satellite radio service is available only within the lower 48 states and parts of Canada — not available in Hawaii, Alaska, or U.S. territories

According to the XM site there is no guarantee of coverage outside the CONUS and parts of Canada, the XM sat foot print looks like this, with the best reception in the center of the pattern

so it may or may not work reliably

Actually the Desire DJ makes up various CDs for each of the different areas around Desire for daytime music - I know this as a fact since I have asked and received play lists from him for music I was interested in getting for myself.

XM uses two satellites that are in a geostationary orbit above the equator. They are aimed in such a way as to provide the best broadcast coverage in the center of the US. As the user moves further away from the center signal quality will degrade and reception may be made worse (or better) depending on environmental factors. The benefit of the XM satellite positioning is that once you have aimed the receiving antenna it will never need adjustment. The disadvantage is that because the satellite is positioned over the equator there is a fairly significant angle that has to be accounted for. Just like satellite television, the antenna points toward the south. If there are any high buildings or terrain the signal may be blocked. For that reason XM has a network of ground based signal repeaters in many large cities. XM named their first two satellites Rock and Roll. They were supposed to have 15 year life span, but there was a problem with the solar panels. Rock and Roll have been replaced with Rhythm and Blues. Rock and Roll still have some life left, but they are in standby mode.

Sirius uses a different orbit, a geosynchronous highly elliptical orbit. The advantage is that the active satellite is directly overhead the center of the US, so buildings and terrain are not likely to interfere with the signal. The disadvantage is that the satellite is moving in relation to the ground, and for some of its 24 hour orbital period it will be way out of position for US broadcasting. To compensate, three satellites are used. One is always in prime position above the US with the other two turned off until they assume prime position and become the active broadcast source. Because of the movement users will occasionally have to adjust their fixed antennas to get the best possible signal.

You may get signal from one or the other in Mexico. Depends on where you are, the type of antenna you are using, and what environmental conditions exist to either enhance or degrade the signal. Both systems have online subscription services, so you can still get the service even if you aren't able to receive the satellite broadcast.

I haven't made any study of the companies since the merger. I would expect that at some point one broadcast model will win out over the other, probably as the life-cycles of the existing satellites close. I think that Sirius has the best possible orbit for reception (particularly for vehicles) and that is the service I use. Having said that, XM has much better names for their satellites!

And now you know more than you ever wanted to about satellite music reception. If anyone wants to know about satellite clock timings and how they prove the theory of relativity, let me know. I'd be happy to discuss it over a beer at the beach. You probably have to be really tipsy to have much interest in it...

I found a geek XM site xm411 dot com and they say you can get it but barely and might need the larger ant.. which needs ac power.
I am prerecording my favs stuff and taking it all spkrs and all so if you hear great music from the cute couple next week come on over and say hi.

Many(including ourselves) who use the beach beds prefer to just chill and hear the sounds of the ocean, etc and really do not appreciate being forced having to hear others music selections. The beach bed are very close - please keep this in mind and bring headphones as well.

We feel as you do. We like the beach beds for all the same reasons and really don't want to hear someone else's music. It has happened before and it felt like such an invasion of a person's space. The choice of music is so subjective.

Good call Coke a couple had there cell phones on the beds next to us. My wife stoped from throwing them in the water.......They actuly ringing and making calls
