Definitely add us to the list as well.

We just found this topic after a few months of not being on this forum. We were there in June of this year and also had $$ stolen from our safe. About $300. It happened on our last day, during our morning breakfast and check out. We had done the survey, etc. and went back to clean up a few things before leaving at 9:30am for our flight back home. It left a very bad impression on us on what should have been pure bliss on our return flight home. We felt awkward about posting our story here and felt violated in a way. Came home, posted about it on the private yahoo group we were part of for June but got busy with life and hadn't been on this forum too much. We are now reading up on this forum and the topic at hand and while we are glad that others have pointed this out to Desire Mngt, we feel sad it is happening to a lot of people. Like others said, I am sure the majority of us had that $$ set aside for tips to the staff and some pocket $$ to get back to the airport.

We agree, that it has to be the same thing/same motto of last 24 hours. It seems almost as if while taking the survey that was much longer than most surveys, someone was tipped off, as they knew we were both in the lobby checking out. The reason we think this, is the $$ was in safe at 7am while up and getting ready to go. So all we had to do was grab breakfast and say goodbye to a few friends (early birds) we saw up at 9am. So between us leaving our room at 8am for breakfast and coming back at 9:15am and spending 15-20 min checking out it had to be the 'window' of opportunity there. We were glad passports weren't taken, Ipad for our trip home, and wife was happy she had her wedding band on her already.

Once we noticed $$ was missing, I went down to the office to the same guy who checked us out, and said I would like to report a theft. They sent security to room and now we have 20 mins until shuttle picks us up. Security comes in tears apart our room and then nothing. Thye were downloading data from the card reader at door and thought, that's how they catch the person. In 2016 with so much being computerized there has to be a log sheet or some data sheet about times cards were swiped, etc. Thankfully we had our shuttle pre-paid for us but our neighbors next to us we became friends offered us some cash for shuttle, as we weren't sure our shuttle was pre-paid at first. We emailed a lady repeatedly for months as we wanted an update the 'investigation'. She was always 'on vacation' or just gotten back and was 'researching'. But same thing as others posted. I lost our key card while having a night of fun at hot tub, and went right to front desk. They asked for my full name and gave me new one. When I told them after $$ was missing, the lady tried to turn it around on me that it was my fault for losing my card.

It won't affect our plans of coming back, but will proceed with a lot of caution. I like the idea of powder and work with a lot of police in my line of work, so may ask them to show me how this works in their work area. :)

Also found tiny nanny cameras we could set up to record to the cloud and then show staff of who the person is. Of course, we would disable it if new friends made their way back to our room to 'cuddle' :D

That has to be the biggest piss off to end a great holiday. Though we have been 8+ times to a total of 15 weeks, we have not had any issues yet !! But this reaffirms that the trail camera and the invisible powder is going along from now on every trip. I am sure Desire would love to catch the crook(s) as well. Likely have a 'look out' when this is happening.

In the end we didn't end up doing anything special and didn't have any problems, however we knew this was a calculated risk. Just ran out of time with all the other trip planning tight timelines. I did hide things more creatively, they would've had to work for it at least, plus our room always ends up looking like a disaster area wherever we go, that alone might scare them off lol.

Twice our safe combination failed and they had to send someone to reset it. Basically it's just an electronic device with a cable they plug in, punch a few buttons and it opens. I'm pretty certain that's how someone would get in. What would pretty much prove that is if you had stuff missing and they used this your combination would be reset. If stuff is missing but your combination is still intact I'm not sure how they would accomplish that.

In any case it is disappointing to have to worry about such things but at least the awareness is raised.

On our next trip I'm going to take this:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JO ... UTF8&psc=1

I'll lock it in the safe and it will be immediately apparent if it's missing or been tampered with. I think these are "crimes of opportunity" where they generally take some cash but not all of it, in order to possibly avoid detection. I doubt they would be foolish enough to take the whole bag from the safe, or cut into it to get the cash.

I was able to get a key when I lost mine from the front desk without having to prove who I was in any way. At first I was thrilled at the convenience, but then scratched my head later.

I doubt very much that somebody from tourists (who paid around 5K for 1 week at the resort) will still $20 or $40 :D
Obviously that this is somebody from resort's workers.
We;ve been several years ago at Bahia Cancun and shoes and other stuff was stolen from our room.... this is one of the reasons that we very rarely going to Mexico,,,,have been almost 20 times to poor Cuba and NEVER had similar issues.
Especially strange that stuff is stolen from the safe as a very limited staff has access to safe master key!
We gonna have my wife's earnings and chains ... so, where is then best place to hide it? Inside sex toys?! Don't want to bring any additional locks....

Most of the time the money stolen is solely for giving out as tips for the staff.
I just don;t understand why do you bring cash for tips?! On website it's written that tips are included! You just corrupt the staff! Yes, we give a lot of tips when we're going to Cuba, but in Couples , Jamaica , where tips are included, neither we nor other guest never give any tips (at least I didn't see it) except in SPA

The tips question has been beaten to death. It's fine to not agree with bringing tips but I don't see how you can say you don't understand why people bring and use them. People have explained the reason ad nauseam.

Whatever everyone says, the major reason people giving tips -> it's to bribe bartenders etc, in order to get fast service and better made beverages. I've never seen that tourists giving tips to gardeners or construction workers on the resort.....:) somehow the biggest tips are getting bartenders ... guess why?!

To each their own thing. Tip if you want to, don't tip if you don't want to as its a personal choice. Again we tip because we want to show the staff how much we appreciate their hard work to serve us not to get better, faster service. When you go out for dinner do tip the waiter before you sit down and eat or when you leave and is the service any different as to when you tip. As its been said before this topic has been worked over so much that it is stale. So tip if you want or don't tip if you don't want its that easy as it will not make a difference in your service at Desire.

I know one thing.... if I eat in restaurant in France ( country with "no tips policy" as tips included in the price -> I don't pay, in US restaurant (where thereis no such policy), I will tip depending on service....

If you want to "double tip" workers for their job - do it, I don't care...

I care more, when should we hide all jewelry if "safe is not safe" at Desire?!

Other than my engagement/wedding ring and other items that I wear all the time, I only take easily replaceable jewellery on my vacations. No matter where I am, I prefer to have less to worry about. It's not just theft, it's worrying about damage or loss in the water or forgetfulness. Besides, after 10 trips to Desire, I have yet to find that person that was studying my earnings over more tangible assets ;-) The "looks nice, but costs hardly anything" items have been just fine down there! :P

In reviewing so many responses and stories that everyone has shared here about having $$ taken from their room (safe or not) we have a few questions for those that have since returned to the resort after the theft occurred.

Did you bring this up to management/staff upon arrival/check-in that you had an issue before? If so, how did you bring it up and what (if anything) did they say? While many others have posted, this won’t affect our plans of returning to such a great resort, and we do feel the majority of the staff are good people. We also won’t debate why we feel it’s necessary to tip, other than that we like to do so. But when we filed our report just 1 hour before leaving, it was very rushed and we were promised an email/update after the ‘investigation’. We made contact with someone and it was like pulling teeth for a response over a 3 month period. We didn’t expect to be made whole or anything. Honestly, we just wanted a heartfelt apology and not a corporate one. To our surprise she finally told us the investigation turned up nothing, and offered us a little something which was more than surprising.

Now, I don’t think it’s right to have pages of print outs (or show them on my phone) of everyone’s stories/experiences of similar incidents from this forum, as it supposed to be very exciting and sexy to arrive for a fun vacation. We don’t want to be accusing within 5 minutes of arrival. But then again, no guests should have to hide their valuables and tip toe around any ‘issues’ the resort is very capable of handling.

Part of me feels there is nothing wrong with mentioning to the host upon check in that we had $$ stolen out of our room this time, and we expect security has been increased. And then let them address it. That being said, there are some very inexpensive nanny cameras to record whom enters the room while we are out. This on top of other measures we would take going forward. It would be pretty hard to deny something when you present video of an employee entering room and going through things. Or perhaps an email should be sent to someone higher up than staff at resort? I haven’t looked on Trip Advisor for any reports of this but there is no way the owners of the resort want this happening and to hurt their image to such a unique and growing marketplace. And we do count on each other for discretion on both sides.

Again, we know this can happen anywhere. But it was our first time happening to us (and we have traveled to other countries around Latin America quite often) and feel we had a standard ‘stock answer’ and response from the day of incident to months later. Sadly in reading all of these comments we realize we aren’t alone and it has become a big problem.

Has anyone talked to host/management/staff upon check in about past incidents while face to face?

I would contact resorts' owners... is it Original resorts group?

It sounds nuts to bring to the resort nanny cameras
