Disappearing beach

Postby SandM » Sun Nov 13, 2016 9:03 am

We are hearing reports that the beach at DRM has eroded to the point of non-existence. Will the resort be retaining the services of a dredging company to repair it? The beach is very much a part of how the resort sells itself online - so it should be repaired, or the old photos of the gorgeous beach need to be updated to what is there now. Any update on plans and/or the future of the beach would be appreciated.

We were there in June and the beach seemed much the same as our previous trips. Even at high tide there was still area for loungers or walks. On the plus the seaweed was much better then on our previous trip.

We were there in October and the last day we were there the beach completely disappeared overnight. Not sure if its a cyclical thing and it will come back naturally but the day we left there was nothing but rocks to try to get into the ocean. Some sand left, but the tide was pretty high that night.

We just got back today (Nov 13th). Unfortunately, the beach is pretty much gone along with the beach bar. However, they are confident they will be able to restore everything as soon as Mother Nature cooperates.

One of the reasons that we go to RM is that we like the beach and swimming better than at Pearl (to be fair though, we only went to Pearl for one afternoon) - it would make us consider switching to Pearl if the beach can't be repaired.

Check out north52's post above. They just returned Nov 13 with a recent update. Doesn't look too promising. :(

We just returned and the south part of the beach by the volleyball court is just fine - the northern part of the beach as of Saturday evening has returned about 80% just due to normal wave actions and having talked with Rene(the beach concierge) he expects full recovery in about 10 days to 2 weeks (barring any further storms action)

Rene should apply for the next available meteorological/oceanographer position that becomes available if he can predict such an optimistic forcast for the future status of the beach.

If I were in Vegas, I'd be betting big time on the "over 2 weeks!"

While the beach volleyball area is relatively unscathed, the remaining 3/4's of the beachfront is nothing what it use to be.

My best estimate is that the ocean is 10-15 feet closer to the shoreline than in the past. (Waves are slapping against the posts of CC's bar)
Beach beds from the central and north end of the beach are now positioned on land directly in front of the corresponding buildings.
They are apparently demolishing what remains of CC's bar and rebuilding it on land near the last property to the north.

While walking the short beachfront is still doable, your head better be down to avoid stubbing your feet on exposed rock. When the ocean pulls back to more normal levels, it will take tons of sand to restore it to previous levels. This will be an enormous undertaking.

In terms of the new building, they have advertised it will be completed by December 1st and available for booking shortly thereafter. Not a chance!!!

My best forecast would be by the end of February at the very best.

There's some construction going on next to the women's washroom at the lobby bar. Apperently, they have plans to extend the lobby bar in that area.

Anyway....just my 2 cents worth for those inquiry minds. :CAN

This does happen from time to time. It comes and goes but Desire is along a national park and the resort really can't do much about it. It's the reason why they could never reconstruct the original dock much like Pearl had after Wilma took it out. That said there still is no place like RM :)

I just spent some time this morning discussing this with our booking agent. They claimed to be unaware of the problem and put me on hold to make some calls. They came back on the phone to tell me the reports I've heard, sadly, are true. I tried to get switched to Pearl but the only rooms left at Pearl were more than $1,000 more than our current reservation at RM (delux ocean view). No can do. There are also no rooms left at RM that are non-ocean view that we could "downgrade" to. We really wanted to have the nice view and walk down to hang out on the beach beds and have the bar right there ... and see no reason to pay up for the ocean view room if that element of the resort doesnt exist, but .... we appear to be stuck. Not to worry...we will spend more time at the pool and hottub (heck, maybe everyone else will too). QUESTION: What is involved in making a daytrip over to Pearl? Have not done this before, so if anyone has visited the other resort while visiting Desire, would love to hear. What does it cost? What is the transportation situation? How long does it take? Is it worth it?

Cheers

I think it's $150 to visit Pearl. Not sure if that includes transportation but I think it doesn't.

The beach at Pearl is nice but not spectacular. Might be worth it if you are really, really into the beach vibe but honestly, that's not where the fun is (for us).

Good luck.
